Too deep, and too much......nope never did that myself.Wow... Never did that. Too deep too much i gather. Baby steps... In and out. In and out
Measure the depth of the hole.
Mark tap accordingly.
Tap to depth until you get close to the mark on the tap.
STOP!!!
PS. FWIW, that looks like a 5/16x18.
You're better off going with a 3/8x16 for several reasons.
Some more obvious than others.
Eutectic 16c brazing rod will braze that back together. But it will prob cost more than a new tap to buy all that is required.
We used to make our own long taps by brazing a tap to a piece of HT tube. The longest being about 400 mm. We put the tap into a tin of salt water while brazing, stops the 1st part of the tap being softened. Salt water is used as it has a higher boiling point.

I just got a long 5/16 X 18 yesterday. I've got a 10" 3/8 X 16 and a long 5/16 X 14 and now this long 5/16 X 18. The extra length for installing new pins after pulling bent ones.

Where do you suggest picking those up at?
Thanks
Tony
Nice meeting you at the MIdwest Cue SHow.
Always interesting posts Neil, thanks.
I just noticed where you are from .. a lovely part of the world. I made a sales call on Waikato University many moons ago ... the IT Director had an office with a patio door out onto the grounds, what a great work place that would be, I've always thought. It even had room for a pool table, just to keep my rambling close to on-topic
