ROLLY “Lando” Vicente, childhood friend and manager of Filipino pool maestro Efren “Bata” Reyes belied allegations published yesterday in some local dailies that Reyes will retire in professional pool this year.
Vicente downplayed the news of Reyes' early retirement as the 'handiwork' of sinister-minded individuals.
“Walang katotohanan iyan, ang katunayan ay aalis nga kami ni pareng Efren (Reyes) sa Martes para sa World 8-Ball sa Fujairah, Japan Open sa Marso 16 at LA Open sa Marso 26.” ("There's no truth to the matter, actually we're leaving to the UAE and Japan in the next two weeks to compete in prestigious events this early), said Vicente in a phone patch interview with this reporter yesterday.
The article on the alleged retirement came out on some newspapers yesterday. It was purportedly written by Inquirer News reporter, AZB.com and filipinopool.com Manila Bureau chief, Marlon Bernardino.
Bernardino, however, denied ever writing the malicious article. He lambasted the originator of the hoax news item for deliberately using his name as well as his email adress.
"There is an apparent intention to destroy my credibility and create some confusions in the pool and billiards community with the spreading of this malicious and derogatory article", Bernardino lamented.
He likewise cautioned newspaper editors to be wary of the authenticity of news items sent to them as it might happen again in the future.
