Nice kick shot by Efren

And I kid you not!

This was from the Efren Reyes vs. Ronnie Alcano
match, one of the highlights of the 1st Villar Cup,
which was held at StarMall in Alabang, Muntinlupa City,
Philippines.

I replayed it a bunch of times and I can't figure out why he didn't go longer on the kick and hit the object ball ball first instead of rail first. It seems like the path he choose he had to bend the cue ball forward with follow, and he still just barely missed hitting some of the interfering balls on the way to the successful hit. If he just went a bit longer, it looks like he would have had a much better chance of a hit.

Of course he had the best result possible, but it just looked like the wrong path to me.

I believed he pretty much figured out the path the CB would take. I would say that he played that shot (thin cut) inorder to pocket that OB. it's quite risky as there were those interfering balls which were just mm apart from the path that the CB took but was certain that he would pot that OB.

surely, he could had just played the high percentage shot by going longer, but by doing that, Efren would leave Ronnie an opening and out.

Efren's main concern is not just to make the hit, but make the shot as well. besides, I couldn't think of any other better alternative than that. surely a counter-safety option in that situation is not available.

So you're second guessing the best player that'e ever lived. Efren can see shots that nobody else can see and kicks better than anyone, so if you second guess his judgement, you're almost guarenteed to be wrong.

Even it's nearly impossibe to accurately judge the angle on that kick, hitting the rail first right before the object ball instead of going directly into the object ball is the best way to play for the hit. Hitting the rail right before the ball instead of going directly into the ball is usually best way to play a kick shot when the object ball is that close to the rail. It makes the object ball play bigger. Also, if you play to hit the object ball full on that shot instead of hitting as thin as Efren did, you don't come near as close to running into the striped ball near the side pocket like Efren almost did.
