Looks nice.
Spalted means rotted, right. :)
Better core it with a really hard dowel.

If U got any Extra for a butt & forearm Section I would like to talk to you about a Trade or Sale...

PM ME
When I get them, I'll look them over! I'm still not totally sure what I want to do with them yet. I have a couple of ideas; 1) ebony forearm with 4 of the curly/spalted points and a curly/spalted butt sleeve, linen wrap 2) bacote or cocabola forearm and butt sleeve w/curly/spalted 3-section handle. But, not really sure yet. I'll think about it! What do you have in mind for trade?

Thanks,
Zim

Honestly Joey-- I really don't know what spalted means, I've just seen it in McDermott's cues and when I seen these photos... the grain got me and I had to have them. What does spalted mean?

Spalted does mean that the cue is diseased or rotting. But it is a beautiful figure though. I tend to appreciate all woods. I can see the beauty in almost every wood. Well I guess I'll ask you. What did you have in mind for a trade? I too enjoy looking at that wood. Well Tony's Idea for the wood.......

Ebony forearm with 4 ebony points. 2 or 3 veneers. black, spalted maple, black. Then a Spalted maple Daimond in each one of the points. Spalted maple handle, with spalted maple wood rings at A,B,C,D, and E. Black phenolic flat-faced joint with a radial Pin......Tony's Drooling hold on......

Ebony Buttsleeve, with spalted maple windows or diamonds (prefer diamonds to match the points) in the butt sleeve. The idea can be tweeked a bit but I just thought of this on off the top of my head. Well at least in the time it took me to type it I was thinking about it. :D How does that cue sound Zim? BADD ASSS :p

Well just picture the cue I described in your head. mmmmmm, sounds delicious to me....lol :p

Oh and the veneers of spalted maple ought to be thicker to really show the figure and outline the points.....Just a thought.

Building a good cue is more than just building something that is pretty or unusual. The reason you don't see many spalted cues is that the wood IS ROTTON. Any cuemaker that is concerned in the least about the durability of his cues or his customer's satisfaction would never build something that is guaranteed to fall apart in a short period of time.

Check this link for a very good discription of spalted wood:

I don't think it is to be taken lightly and it is NOT funny in my opinion. To use spalted is NOT

Good Cuemaking

Tell that to ......

Kikel, Madden, Chuddy, Stacey, jacoby,Prather, AE,Krick,Drexler, just to name a few that use or have used spalted maple

All of these makers I think are concerned about the durability of their cues!!!

I have used Spalted Maple for butt sleeves & inlays only. It's light weight & I think it would have to be cored for a cue...JER

So it's ok to use rotton wood if somebody else does?

Not in my book.

Like a lot of things, there are degrees of 'spaltedness' , I think. The trick is to get lightly spalted wood, which would have the discoloration of the grain but still retain the majority of it's structural integrity. Of course it would be silly to make a cue out of rotten wood, but not all spalted wood should be considered 'rotten'.

Wood turners that make bowls and what not, often spalt wood themselves. They get the wood damp, often wrap it in damp newspapers, seal it in a garbage bag, and wait. The most common woods to artificialy spalt are probably pecan, birch, and maple. The rotting does reduce the strength of the wood, and in IMHO it makes a softer hitting cue as it tends to dampen vibration. Sure can be pretty though. If you like a cue with lots of feedback, I might consider coring it, rather than using as a forearm.

I see - if you use only lightly spalted wood and core it you get a "half rotton cue".:(

Don't kid yourself - rotton is rotton - even it it looks pretty to you. To me it is ugly and unsuitable for a cue regardless of who made it.

It is beyond me why any cuemaker would use spalted wood when there are so many wonderful woods readily available that look beautiful and are durable.

Spalted wood is NOT

Good cumaking,
