Some drunk guy fell on my cue today and theres a decent nick in the buttsleeve. its through the finish into the wood, but not very big. is there a way to fill it in, or smooth it over or would the wood have to be sanded down?

You basically have two choices, and I would do the first. If there is a cue Maker or a Good Trusted Cue repairman near you take it to them. For some one who knows what they are doing it is an easy to repair the problem, in fact it should not even be noticable after the repair. Prices for this work will vary from location to location, I normally charge around $40.
If it doesn't really bother you to much, wait until the cue needs a re-finish and have it done then. But, in the mean time since the wood is exposed, I would fill the hole with a little Super Glue to seal it. Tape off the area around the damage, and apply just enough glue to seal the hole.
