Nickel or dime

Oh yeah?
My carom cue is 11.5 mm...won't find much bigger than 12mm at 3 cushion.

..and I hope all my opponents use flat tips....
..I use 'dime' shape 'cause I like to spin the ball

I did some checking and pt is entirely correct regarding tip diameter on 3-cushion (carom) cues. My bad.
I still don't know why he got mad at me though. I thought we was friends. Everyone makes mistakes, now and again. I don't understand.

Right now, my playing cue has the Kennedy half dollar. :(

LOL!! You have enough tip there for 5 dime shaped tips and 10 nickled!;)

I have always shaped tips according to shaft size. Smaller shaft-dime,,and larger- nickle.

Seems a dime on a larger tip dia. would be too rounded,,but honestly I have never done it.

Great responses ,from some on here.

To get the desired English when playing you need the proper curve on the edge of the tip. For a 14mm tip a nickel curve would be plenty of downward curve on the edge of the tip for most players. For a 13mm to 13.5mm most prefer somewhere between a nickel and a dime. For smaller sizes like 12mm or smaller a dime is not even small enough for most. It is that outside curve that you want to match up with the cue ball and the smaller the tip the smaller curve is needed. A nickel looks almost flat on a 11mm tip and a dime is just starting to show enough curve to even look shaped close to right. Different players have different taste and ways of striking the cue ball, so one size does not fit all.

Hey, Chris. Good to hear from you. :)

Yeah, you're right Tramp.
Us sea-going vessels have to stick together.....
...although we still seem to be a few ships short of a flotilla...:)

Seems to me there should be a scientific ratio for the curve of a tip to
the curve of a ball..I use 'dime' on every thing.

Where's Doctor Dave when you need him?
Be nice if Bob Jewett spoke up also.

pt..<..who hopes all his opponent's tips have the curve of a manhole cover

FYI, all of my analysis and opinions on this topic can be found here:

There ain't no scientifically-based magical shape that's "best" for everybody, IMO.

Thanx Doc...you're the best.
When I changed from standard 13mm-nickle shape to 12mm-dime shape...
.within two weeks I was winning giving up the 8 to players I used to duck
playing even.
Gotta acknowledge Al Safron from Detroit for that...may he RIP.

However, Doc, I am surprised to see you employ the demotic 'aint'....
...youse been hangin' 'round too many pool halls....:)
