nine ball game

The shorter race gives the weaker player more of a chance but the better player is always favored to win. I don't think a lot of lesser players understand this.

It is a statistics problem, mostly. The less games, the further from average you will see, so the weaker player will have a chance, but like said before, the weaker player isn't favored, unless there is weight involved.

Another factor that goes against the weaker player besides statistics is endurance. Two more games could make the weaker player even worse physically or mentally. Stronger players typically get that way playing long hours with a lot of mental preparation.

Like others have already stated, shorter races give better odds to the weaker player. But like Vegas, odds favor the house or better player in this case.
Always get weight if you are the weaker player.

Nine ball is also very popular and it actually started off in the United States in the 1920s and the object of the game is to hit the balls into the pockets in numerical order.

Thanks for the info. I am been playing a guy who gives me some weight. We started out playing a race to seven. Last week, because of time limits we changed it to five. I will try to keep it at 5. I hope he doesn't read this :smile::smile:

In that case we don't know who is favored by the longer race. If he is giving you too much weight then you want the longer set, assuming you are playing just one set.

The first time we played he gave me the 6 in one race to 7. I won. The next time we played he gave the 7 in 2 races to 5 and he won both races. He said he would give me the 6 again when we play this Thursday.

That isn't enough info (enough sets played) to know if you are favored with the 6 or not (or whether he is favored giving you the 7 for that matter). But like others have said, if you are favored to win with whatever spot you are getting, you will win more often with longer sets. And if your opponent is favored in the game with whatever spot he is giving you, you will win more often with shorter sets than with longer sets (but with both short or long sets your opponent will still win more often than you if he is favored).

There could be rare exceptions to some of the above if you just can't focus for very long at all, or don't start playing well until you are a few games into a set, etc, but for the most part when your opponent is favored with the spot the shorter you want the races, and the more you are favored with the spot the longer you want the races.
