How can any rule set that removes 2 way shots be any good? On a related note, taking luck out of the game completely is dumb. Every major sport has some element of luck and so should pool.

i tend to agree with you. and i also tend to take a giant mound of shit for having that oppinion. good luck to you. i hope you don't hear the same crybaby shit i have to listen to when i talk about this.

Pool is closer to sports like Archery, Target Shooting and Chess than things like basketball and even golf.

How often do people make a random move in Chess and come out a winner? Or fire at a target, have it bounce off a tree and hit the target and count?

I am OK with 2-way shots, but I do not like not calling your pocket.

In every major sport I can think of "luck" is when you try something that's nearly impossible...but it works. Since the odds of it working are so low, we call it luck.

But if I smash into a cluster of balls just hoping something will drop...well, to me that's just boring. I'd rather call the 1-into-the-4-into-the-9-in the corner pocket, and make it. Then you can say I was lucky; and you'd be right.

As far as two-ways? I like them. I think the "back-to-you" option is fine for the pros, but players at my level would find that pretty frustrating.

2 way shots are my bread and butter, especially since my aim sucks lol

I like call ball, call pocket though.

Now I do like calling the pocket when you're shooting, I just don't think you should get punished when shooting an intelligent 2 way. But yeah I do like not being able to luck balls in and continue shooting. I just don't think you should have to call safe EVER playing rotation games.

That I agree with. Sorry, I interpreted your original post as a no-call-nothin' idea.

To me I look at it as a trade off; I lose the 2 way option but I never have to worry about my opponent gaining the advantage due to their errors. Can't have both and looking back at 25yrs worth I rather have the latter.

In call safe games you can still call a pocket and be willing to live with the results if you miss, may improve your position? Might call this a half way shot?

If you're referring to some of the rules used in 10 ball, I think 1 two way shout should be allowed to be called during each game.

Otherwise, people would be calling a 2 way shot on every single shot.

Can't say I would be against one called 2 way per rack.

One more thought I hadn't mentioned

I have conversations all the time with people who say things like "did you see him get that lucky safe on me there?" Or " did you see him make that ball 2 rails in the side when he odviously was trying to 1 rail it?" Etc etc

Thing is, you make your own luck in pool. Almost every time your opponent gets lucky on you it follows some error of yours. Whether it be a missed shot or missed position that caused you to play safe or even when you played safe and should have run out. Most always your opponent gets lucky because YOU ALLOWED HIM THE OPPURTUNITY!

And of course luck is a two way street, nobody can ever say that it hasn't gone their way too so just roll with the punches!

People should quit whining and accept it :-)

Should you be able to call a shot with "or" in the middle?

No, then you are may as well say "or this ball in this pocket or that ball in that pocket or safe..."

I had this in my 10 ball league, I had a fairly easy shot on a ball in the corner, at the same time the 10 was lined up for a carom into the opposite corner, I had to hit it on the shot. I made them both. I was thinking about calling the 10, but the carom going in was maybe 50/50, the shot was an almost sure 100%, so I picked the shot to call. I ended up losing the game though because I played a bad safe later in the rack, but I think I made the right choice.

Am I misunderstanding something? This is what we call a 2-way shot in our area: you shoot a shot, and leave the cue ball in a spot that if you make it you have shape for the next ball, but if you miss it you leave the guy safe. It's both an attempt and a safe at the same time.

What are you guys meaning when you say 2-way shot?

Secondly, I prefer call ball and pocket. True, there are instances where the player may miss the pocket and luckily carom off a ball into the intended pocket. That's like a baseball outfielder losing the deep fly ball in the sun, having the ball hit him on the head, and bouncing over the fence for a home run. Weird stuff happens.

Unlike a complete blind luck shot in 9-ball banging around like a pinball, going all over the table and finally falling in the pocket on the opposite side of the table. Also true, that everyone plays 9-Ball by the same rules and we all get a crazy lucky now and then. But, in golf, when you tee up on the long par 5, rip a huge slicing drive over to the neighboring par 3 green and sink it, you don't score a hole-in-one.

Just my two cents.

I too have had many of those conversations and my reply was much like yours, usually due to your previous error ;).

Can't say I never whined but I was as good as anyone when it came to not whining. As VA stated I knew what I was getting into.

So yes, whine, quit whining, accept it or make it better if you can.

I love and believe in your signature quote.

There are two types of 2 way shots.

1: like you mentioned above

2: when you are trying to make 1 object ball, but also caroming into another object ball.

In current called shot 10 ball, depending on the variations of rules used, a few problems exist with 2 way shots.

If you are playing only slopped in balls gives your opponent the option to give you the shot back, there is no issue with the type of 2 way shot you described. However, if he can give the shot back to you if you miss your shot, then he's just going to give you the shot back if you miss and leave him safe, nullifying your 2 2 way shot.

In standard called shot 10 ball, you can only call 1 ball. So you can't use carom 2 way shots. You would have to call an individual ball, and if you made the carom, the ball would stay down, unless it was the 10 ball, in which case the 10 ball would spot and you keep shooting.

If you missed the called ball but made the carom, the pocketed ball would stay down, your opponent would come to the table and because you slopped a ball in, would have the option of giving the shot back.

So, there are a few minor problems with no 2 way shots being allowed in called shot 10 ball.

Well put VA, this is more in line with the direction I'm trying to go here. Eating lunch or my response might be more detailed.
