Ah the No Gambling story has been triggered. Well there was a ground work court case in Washington state that established that playing for money was a contest of skill and therefore Not gambling. While pool tournaments were never questioned the contest of skill ruling meant that in heads up matches the money could be on the table or the light.
So anyway, I was playing a $5 game when a rookie challenged our table with 3 adjacent and vacant. I tried to gently explain that it was a $5 game and he was welcome to challenge at that rate. He puffed all up and played the pool room lawyer with, "you can get the house in trouble for gambling. " My reply was short and to the point. "We are Not gambling. This is A Pool Tournament. Single game single elimination and the entry is $5. When we finish this tournament another will be played. Do you want in?" He took his quarter and left, Grumbling under his breath. 🤷‍♂️

Back in the day we had 4 pool halls in town I lived in and every one of them had the no gambling sign which nobody paid any attention to of course lol
Sadly all those halls are closed now and only a few coin bar boxes is all that's left for pool there nowadays
