No Jelly For My Belly, Down In Louisiana

This past weekend I went to play in the Ozone Billiards US Amateur Open. That was my first mistake since less then 30 players showed up. But my second mistake is the real reason for this post.

My second mistake was that I didnt buy half of my self in the calcutta for $20. I finfished 2nd place and this is the part that pissed me off. I meet with Kieth, the owner of Emeralds Billiards, to collect my tournament money. The guy who bought me in the calcutta is on his way home to Thibodaux, LA so I had Kieth call him up. Kieth gets on the phone with this guy and said, " I got Dalton standing here in front of me, he played real good. Do you want me to tip him?" The old guy said, "no, send it to me".

I got one thing to say about this old guy, NO CLASS!!! Im down in Louisiana and this old guy wont even buy me a bowl of Gumbo for my hard work.

By no means is this meant to sound as attacking or negative,

So if you bet on a horse at the racetrack and win, Should you automatically tip the Jockey?

I 100% see your point but you seem to have a sense of entitlement, If you lost would you have given the buyer half his money back?

If you won maybe he would have thrown you a bone, however there is no written rule that he must throw some jelly your way. Nice finish btw, and good luck in your future matches

I understand where your coming from, but at the same time you didnt want to go half on yourself, which was only $10. The old man assumed all the risk in the Calcutta.

You are actually mad that someone didn't give you a gift when you were too cheap to spend $20 to buy it yourself???

I do agree with your comment, there is no written rule on this matter. So, with that being said, there is a part of me that understands there is no obligation to hand out jelly to a player. Its just simple matter of the individual himself. I tip every one that works for me from food servers to hotel maids. I grew up this way under my father and feel it is proper and courteous.

It just insults me that when I made the guy over 18x his money, he didn't give me a nickle to say "THANKS". Maybe I was a little harsh when I called him "MF" and I will take that back.

Thank you for you congrats on my finish.

No offense, but Joey T. is right -- it appears you still have that sense of entitlement. Look at it from another angle -- that old guy's probably thinking the same thing about you. "This guy was too cheap to go half with me on a measly $20 [not like it was $200]. So he closed that door, and I took on all the risk. But now that he actually placed in the tournament, through the owner he's 'hinting' at me that I 'owe' him a little jelly?!?"

You can see that door swings both ways. In the future, don't leave it to chance (or "expect") that you deserve jelly. Pony up the half (especially in small dollar situations), and there will be no question.

Congrats on your finish, btw. By not taking half in the calcutta, I'm assuming you weren't expecting such a good outcome?

I wasnt to cheap. I had $600 cash on me. For the record, when they auctioned me off in the 8-ball am, I was starting a match in the 10-ball pro. After I played that match, I had to go straight into an 8-ball am followed by another. Then J.A. was waithing for me on our 10-ball match.

By the time I got to meet the buyer, I had won three 8-ball matches one 10-ball and lost one 10-ball. I couldnt find it in me to ask the guy, " hey, Im going to be playing for the hot seat, can I by half now".

My mistake for not taking care of it when I was playing my first 10-ball match.

Lol, little side note to, I always buy half of myself. This was the first time I didn't.

You say the guy had no class, I feel like you have none expecting something that you had no guts to risk something on your self. As someone else said would you have given him half his money back if you would have played bad. And before you say something about me, yes I did give a guy back his money when he backed me on what should have been a sure bet that I screwed up.---Smitty

I was in the same situation once many, many years ago! A buyer bought me for $30 and I felt the field was too strong for me to place in the calcutta money so I didn't pay him the $15. Well guess what, I placed 3rd.
I feel like that if I did not have the confidence in myself to buy half then I don't deserve any jelly. I've bought a lot of players in my time and if they placed, I always give them something! But for myself I just feel a little different if someone buys me, so I always buy half since that time.

Hahahahahaha....bet you pay the 10 bucks next time. Lulz

Edit/ I can understand getting caught up in playing two events and not finding the guy in time. I think i would have at least explained the situation to him and see if he would have let me buy half.

No offense but way to show your ass~!

I have won several tournaments without buying half, cause usually it's a bad gamble just with money odds. Normally i get hooked up, but I NEVER feel like its owed to me.

Now if the guy says "play well and i will take care of you" then leaves at 12am when the tournament doesn't get over until 5am.. that sucks! lol

Just do what i do, say look im sorry i cannot buy half, it just doesn't seem like the risk is worth the reward to me, but i will play my butt off nomatter what.

Most people appreciate your honesty and will if not give you some jelly, atleast praise your playing!

In the end, its nice to get the cheese, but just be happy to be winning.

P.S. but for your case it was only 10dollars

No Class

Before you shoot your alligator mouth off make sure it don't overload your skinny backside. For your information I never made a penny with the calcutta and would have lost money if you would have bought half but spending that $20 was too tough for a nit like you to do. I will gladly give you my home address if you feel the old guy was class deficient and you
have the urge "to get even " ! Of course we both know that won't happen because you are obviously an internet tough guy. Find it strange that you didn't mention your teammate won the Senior division did you ask for part of that money too.:(

I would NEVER ask for a tip from the person who bought me and I certainly would never ever ever ever have someone call them and ask them for a tip on my behalf. If I buy ALL of someone in a calcutta then I will usually throw them a little jelly if they come through. But if I don't then I don't expect to be called low class or any other name.

What I do is make sure that the guy running the calcutta knows I want half of myself before the calcutta goes off.
