I know a person that sponsored an up and coming player... I mean a really good up and comer. He played in the US Open and didn't even put the sponsor logo on his shirt (which is all the sponsor requested for several thousand dollars). Needless to say, the sponsor dropped him. I cannot believe it when people do stuff like this. Heck, I know the person that bought my son a Slushy last hockey game. I'll make sure I get their son one this week.

Some people... not worth worrying about.

In my position with Tiger one of my duties is handling all the Tiger player representatives. The ones that do not last with us, more often than not, fit the above statement.

For some reason, many good players are so singularly focused they just do not see the bigger picture and shoot themselves in the foot by biting the hand that feeds them--time after time.

The top three male pool players to sponsor/support at this time would be Ralf Souquet, Johnny Archer and Shane VanBoening. Most others, you are taking way too many risks. The aforementioned guys, handle their business as I have seen.

Oh yeah and me :D . I handle my biz, but too bad I can't play.............:cool:
 
People value less the things they are given for free than the things they actually have to work/pay for themselves. This is a universal truth, I think.

As some one who was able to benefit from your generosity once let me say "Thank you and our sport needs many more like you." But also as some one who had circumstances that caused them to pull out of an event let me say to Mike, "I am sorry for the hassle and extra work." To all those who will never benefit from Mike's generosity, "I am sorry if myself and too many others life events have made Mike uninterested in doing as he has done in the past. It is Truly a great loss..."

As with Corey, I made sure Mike got his entry fee back from Mr. Zuglan and made up the $50.00 difference. But it sounds like Mike has had a bad string of luck w/ players not quite as honorable as some of us. That just plain sucks for those of us who were very greatful and appreciative of Mike's generosity and for all those who will never get the chance to experience it.

Hope all is well w/ you and yours. I don't get here too much any more but saw this and thought what a shame. Best of luck.

As a TD for a regional tour, I encounter this problem constantly.

99% of the players that call before hand to be put on the player's list I know are good as gold about showing up and paying their entry fees.

There are 3-4 players who I won't even put on the player's list even if they are in the pool room until I have their entry fee in hand.

The players that get me the worst are the ones that pay their entry fee, then after the draw is done, come up, look at the brackets, and ask for their money back because they have an "emergency" and have to leave. LOL

You do get jaded after this happens a few times. Sorry, NO REFUNDS, once the draw is posted.

Thank you for the kind words. It is always nice to have an ace in the hole. I will keep you in mind for the August TS Classic XI. We'll see how the touring fund looks as it approaches. Glad to have a stand up guy like you in my corner. It makes the trail just a little easier.
 
In relation

to Poker, this is one reason the Olathe Shootout generated so much interest, with each entry having to put up $10,000, whether they had a backer or not.
TAR catered to a niche in the marketplace for Pool, and is one of the reasons they took off and grew a lot.

It seems as if the IPT recognized that, as they are having challenge matches now.

Perhaps these challenge matches or group ring games could have $5-10,000 entries, and get some type of sponsorship to add money to the event to sweeten the payback. Ring games are particularly interesting, because many players are putting it on the line, and maybe the best player, or who you think is the best, might not win in a ring game.

BTW, just a side note, Tom 'Dr. Cue' Rossman will be at Shooters in Wichita on March 4th for an exhibition at 7 pm. It is free to anyone that wants to attend. First come, first serve.
 
mike, let me say that I have found you to be an honorable and generous man, involved in a less than honorable environment. Your contributions will be missed. Oddly enough, though, you won't see me trying to change your mind.

I too, have decided to withdraw ALL of my financial support of this sport. I no longer support players or events. My experiences mirror yours as do my feelings. Sadly, now, I no longer feel compelled to contribute to a sport where the overwhelming majority of the players don't deserve the support of the fans that can actually afford to make a difference.

I still enjoy playing, but I only see the game for what enjoyment I get from it, not what I candy for its advancement.

I don't want to trash the whole community, but again, I have found that both the fans and players aren't worth helping........

Sorry you had to have your feelings hurt, especially after bestowing, like myself, your unconditional generosity on a thankless community.
