Nova TLC

Hi folks. Just picked this Nova up in a trade and was thinking about fixing up a little clear coat bubble I saw on the bottom of the butt. It's maybe a quarter of an inch big.

I know it wouldn't take much to fix and I have some woodworking experience and a lathe for bowl/spindle making, but i'd hate to screw something up. I imagine it would require slowly sanding the clearcoat off of the entire bottom section until i reach level with the bottom of the bubble. Then apply poly in several coats over the course of the next week or so.

Does this look like something i should take to a cue guy or is it something manageable by myself?

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you can do it if you have wood painting experience. I have done painting myself but when it comes to finish work, I always prefer to have it done by a pro. Scot at Proficient can refinish the buttsleeve for $50, or the whole cue for about $85. He has it down to a science and you won't have to worry about screwing it up. The wrap and buttcap lines will be seamless and you won't have to worry about longevity. If you do it yourself, preference is wet sand it well to remove loose finish, apply clear poly couple of coats, let cure and polish smooth. The finishes you choose and the polishing technique make a major difference in the outcome and it's longevity. Since you have a lathe, wet polishing with pumice with the wrap well protected would probably be the best choice.

Have a pro do it. That finish is not normal. It's probably an epoxy. It doesn't sand the same as other finishes. There would always be a line there if everything else turned out perfect. Cue work is very specific - you could probably just have the buttsleeve refinished. Cheap and no headaches.
