Has anyone removed the wooden Ferrule off a OB-1?

I would like to try and looking for some insight on what to expect. Wouldn't want to damage the shaft beyond repair.

Plus I would like replace that wood ferrule with another material.

Thanks in advance.

It doesn't sound like you have replaced a ferrule before, so this one is probably not the one to start on.
I would set the shaft aside and buy a new one - whether it is an OB with a non-wood ferrule or another brand. Then you have your original shaft still intact to compare back to and should you decide it was indeed better than its replacement, you can sell the new one. The OB will always be easy to sell in the For Sale forum.
My 2 cents,

There is a wood tenon underneath the ferule. It is not threaded so when removing the old one, make small passes. Some times there may be structural damage to the tenon depending on how bad the ferule damage was. If you do not have a lathe or you have never replaced a ferule I'd pass it on to a compitent repairman or send it into OB, they are always helpful.

i have an used OB-1 that i want to give a cue repairman to do some experimenting with. just wondering if there was any prior experience with this.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hi,

I used to have a huge repair biz at my pool hall servicing 84 total league teams and the regular players.

One thing that I have noticed concerning OB shafts with these ferrules is that never once has anyone wanted to remove one to try something new. As a fact I never encountered one that needed a ferrule replacement.

If you want to experiment, My advise would be to contact OB and order one of their shafts with the ferrule material you desire. Then you will be able to compare the two shafts and not devalue the first one.

If you find you like one more than the other you can then match both and the have two shafts that you are happy with.

I have replaced several. There is a wood tenon underneath. Any competent repairman would know how to proceed with a "unknown." The problem arises with the 'competent' part since OB has step by step instructions, as MT3 linked.
