OB-1 Shaft Pros and Cons

I have an older Schon with an original shaft that has the name on the collar and not on the shaft and was considering getting something to replace it. I don't think I would like the smaller tip of the Pred Z shaft, so if you could compare/contrast the pros and cons of the OB-1 and the 314. Is the OB-1 just a smaller company and that's why you don't hear about them as often, or is it an inferior product? I know it can be very subjective to opinion, but let me know what you think.

OB-1 is definitely not an inferior product. It has a great feel and very little deflection. The shaft diameter is perfect for me.

I have bought 2 OB 1 shafts on two different cues and they both hit great they come with a medium tallisman tip and they are awesome. I just changed the tip on the first shaft i bought to a soft tiger and will be going back to a tallisman. Try one you will be impressed. Leonard

I too have bought two of them, one was a radial pin for a Josswest and the other was a 5/16x14 for a joss. I sold both of them due to little splinters I was getting in my hands from both shafts which were ordered at different times. I have heard this from others as well, not sure what the issue is. I will say the hit was decent and I did like the Talisman tip......my .02

I like the OB-1 Shaft- but prefer the 314-2 over it. What ever your choice, you'll be happy with it.

Thank you all so much for the responses. It seems that all the people who play with the OB-1 are very happy with it. I guess I'll just have to find a way to convince the boss that it is a need and not a want. :D

I switched from the 314 to the OB-1 and use the OB-1 shaft exclusively on a Schon butt and love it (and I used Predator shafts for 10 years)

You will like the OB-1

I would like to hear Royce's thoughts about the splinters talked about in one of the post above, I have never had any problems with splinters maybe someone sanded the shaft? Leonard

First of all, thanks to all those who have chimed in about how much they like their OB-1 Cue Shaft!

Let me say to all that have an OB-1 cue shaft or are thinking about getting one: “Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction.” What we mean is that if you have one of our products and you have a problem with it, contact us. We will do our best make it right. You can email us at rbunnell@obcues.com, or you can call us toll free at 877-399-9901. We are available pretty much 8 to 5 Monday through Friday. If you miss us, please just leave a message and we will get back with you when we return.

Dareads,

To answer your question about how little you’ve heard about us: yes, we are a small company but we’re growing because of customer acceptance. We have been building OB-1 cue shafts for a couple of years. We’re now in a new facility with more workers and are able to approach a broader market.

Poolcuemaster,

About “Splintering”: A few of our customers have experienced this problem. In all cases reported to us, we have either repaired the problem, or replaced the cue shaft. The number of occurrences is very low. While most OB-1 shafts will never have this problem, there are a few things that can be done to lessen the likelihood that it will occur. We use a number of steps and products to “Condition” and “Seal” the cue shaft during the final stages of its manufacture. If this “Conditioning” and “Sealing” is stripped away they should be replaced. There are many shaft sealing and conditioning products out there that will do this, or we can do it for you. Sanding or cleaning with a solvent based cleaner is usually what removes the sealers. I should mention that once a cue shaft absorbs some of the oils from your hands and develops that natural “Patina”, the likelihood of this problem occurring is virtually zero.

Come visit our booth at the Super Billiards Expo, March 15th to 18th.

It took some convincing for me to change to the OB-1 shaft as I have original Schon as well. Royce was able to provide me with a longer OB-1 shaft then my Schon has, which i absolutely love. It tooks me a few weeks to adjust, but after 4 months, I won't go back to the Schon.
