OB-1 Shaft questions

Thanks for your opinions. However I dont understand the shaft whipping one.

I used a predator right until switching.

I thought the ferrule would drive me nuts but I dont even notice it. I do notice the ferrules cap though. Doesnt bother me at all.

The hit IMO is very quiet and I think that gives the soft impression.

I get much more english on shots with the OB shaft.

Not sure why but it doesnt seem to throw the OB as much. This has taken some getting used to. Could just be a slight difference in deflection between my old shaft and this one.

Cueball path after contact is a little different. I can force the cueball forward faster and on a narrower line if that makes any sense.

I have never thought much about taper at all on any cue. Maybe I should pay more attention to it. If I havent noticed anything so far its probably alright.

Interested in learning more about these "micro splinters". Mine has developed a sort of rougher area where my bridge hand is located. It doesnt bother me but it feels different. Is that a "micro splinter" area?

I have not been able to play as much as I would have liked since getting the shaft. Hopefully over the next few weeks I can get a real good feel for it.

Consistent, soft hit but solid hit is awesome, in my opinion is very similar to
the deflection of the original 314
Preferred over predator because I think it has a better wood feel to the stick.
To me the 314-2 has a lot more potential but the shaft itself doesn't feel like
I'm stroking through wood. It feels like I'm stroking through some kind of
artificial material. It just doesn't feel natural.

It accumulates chalk really fast. I wipe down my stick everyday and still manage to have chalk on it everyday. A good player said the hit is so soft its hard to tell if you have the right speed or not. I don't have a problem with that.

I have 314 and 314-2's. Have played with OB-1's. I believe the OB-1's are more lively with the english. Less effort with the OB-1 for spin, top or draw strokes in comparison to Predator.

Drawbacks=====soft hit from wood ferrule.

Have played with two OB-1 conversions. These have had the wood ferrules removed and replaced with 1/2" Ivory ferrules. Boom----solid hit is back. Same playability as before but with more feed back. These conversions blow the 314 and Z product lines out of the water. Just wish OB would install the ivory ferrule from the factory. I might have to email them and see if they would and still warranty their product. That will be at a later date.

Yes, I agree about the soft hit, I want more feedback as well, but wouldn't the ivory ferrules cause more deflection?

half inch ferrules are shorter---hence not as heavy as a standard 3/4" ferrule......honestly with the ivory on them the hit was so crisp and precise I was drilling the back of the pocket out everytime(table length half cut shots at warp speed----a favorite drill shot of mine). Never noticed deflection after 2 hours of shooting.

Hey Snap9 i'm still trying to find the dirty buthead, but the question now is did the cue repairman cut the wood ferrule down to make a tennon or cut the wood ferrule off and insert a wood tennon in a hole drilled in the shaft?

where did you have the ivory conversions done? This sounds interesting, I love the low deflection qualities of the OB-1 but I always go back to my Ivory ferruled shafts.

Leonard I will ask him how he did it. I won't see the guy til probably next weekend and I will ask him at that time how he did it. ((((From my understanding the OB-1 has a normal style tenon on it----BUT TO BE SURE I WILL ASK HIM HOW HE DID IT))))))) If I remember correctly he said the wooden ferrule shredded while cutting it off leaving the tenon in tack for simple replacement.

twighlight---->>>> They were not my OB-1's they are a friend of mine and he personally did the ferrule addition. I believe Kevin Varney from this board does the ferrule changes on the OB-1's also if memory serves me right. You might want to contact him if you are interested in that style adjustment to the OB-1 shaft.

By the way!!!! I am not recommending anyone alter the OB-1 for warranty reasons. OB makes an awesome shaft that speakes for itself. This modification by adding a white ferrule(ivory or other material) to this style shaft is done at your discretion. I don't want no one whining to me if you do change it and don't like it. Personally I do love the modified hit, but that is my opinion.

I will put faith in John's words and will see if he wins a few tournaments with the OB 1 shaft. I like them and the hit as does Earl and Grady now so maybe there catching on with some pros, they are well made for sure.

For you guys that use or tried OB-1s

1- Were you using a Predator beforehand?
No
2- How can you compare the effects of english... the same, more, less.

3- Biggest complaint
Missing cut shots that I don't normally miss when I use low left or low right English.4- biggest compliment
Can cut a ball off the back/foot rail with greater consistency than with any other shaft.5- thoughts about the hit ... softer than a predator??

6- any other thoughts on the shafts
I consider the shaft a quiet shaft and don't think of it as a soft hit.
I'm still not sure which direction I am going as I am back working on a standard shaft with my own personal taper and diameter cut back.

thanks
I am trying one right now and am just wanting to compare thoughts

My OB xperience

The only complaint is microsplinter I sent the shaft back to Royce Last November and I haven't seen the shaft back until today. Would love to play with the OB-1 again
