OB1 shaft

I have an OB1 shaft in the shop for repair. The consumer did not want the expense of shipping both ways to have it fixed by the manufacturer.

What has happened is the tip, pad and a bit of the foam has come off the shaft and left a small shallow depression in the end of the ferrule.

My proposed fix is to fill the depression with epoxy (less than 1/16" deep), put on a regular pad and a new tip.

I have told the consumer that this would effect the low deflection aspect of the shaft but also said that it would not be a major effect.

Suggestions??
 
I understand that the round-trip shipping from up north there is killer,so he may never want to make a claim on his warranty, but if you don't put on one of their carbon fiber pads, his warranty will be void.

I just did a Predator break shaft. The foam or whatever material that was in the end seemed to have shrunk, or sunk. I don't believe that any material came out when the tip and pad popped.

I always keep medicine bottles of saw dust from whatever wood I have been cutting.

I did a fine grind with some maple dust in the palm of my hand and mixed some with epoxy. I built up the end of the shaft. I let it set for 24 before I faced it off. After I faced it off, you couldn't tell it wasn't part of a normal shaft. All blended in just fine.

Altho I keep a few of the carbon pads from OB on hand, I used a regular fiber pad with the tip. Haven't had any phone calls yet so it must still be on there.

OB is very adamant about the use of their propriety pads. They are made of carbon fiber and as such are very much stronger, lighter and resists stretching so that as the tip mushrooms there is no tendency to spread the the ferrule causing it to break or deteriate. There is no guarantee unless the original type of pad is used.

On their web site they explain both the correct way to install a tip and the reasons.

I realize that Dick. I only had a couple of OB carbon pads left due to me sending most of mine away to people who needed them. I had 2 OB ferrules left so I figured I better hang onto the pads I had for them.

Thats why I used a regular fiber pad on the Predator shaft.

Which reminds me, I should order some more ferrules and pads from OB.
