Hello fellow pool players. I have a question awhile ago i was playing in a nine ball tourny and during a match i broke the balls and made nothing my opponent whom ive never met before and i didnt really know anyone in the pool room well i left him hooked on the 1 ball he gets up looks over the table then without letting me know he was pushing out he shoots the 9 in the corner and spots it back up. now ive been out of the pool scene for about a year but ive logged in about 20 years of playing and never has an opponent not called a push out before they did it. So i asked him politely "was that a push"? and he looks at me like im trying to scheme him into giving me ball in hand he says "dude you know it was a push because it looked obvious" I said well what i know is that your supposed to inform your opponent before you push. anyway i let him shoot it he missed i ran out. My question is i need to know is it written that you must inform your opponent of a push out? or is it just a gentlmanly thing? i mean i dont know this guys ability maybe he's tryin to kick at the 1 ball and missed it really bad! then says after the fact that it was a push! Turns out he plays pretty good and i was thinking he might be tryin to get one over on me. just the way he was stressing that the push was obvious but like i said no one has ever not called a push on me.

Yes ...

It is in the rules, and always enforced in tournament play, but in money matches or friendly matches, players do not always observe that rule, but if I were you, I would.

You are suppose to call a push, no matter how obvious. I'm suprised he said nothing, given the fact that you guys do not know each other. I might not say it if I am playing a friend or someone who I know understands it is a push. However, you should always say something to the person, ecspecially if you don't know them. There are too many nitty people out there who will try and pull moves.

My only (to the best of my knowledge) begotten son calls his pushout and waits until I acknowledge it, or I take ball in hand. That's the rule.

Yes, it is written that you have to call when you are going to push. On the other hand, it is the gentlemanly thing to do to let him slide. "Be strict in how you behave and accpeting of how others behave." Or, you could have called the TD over and made an enemy for life.

One way to handle it is to say, "You've got to be careful with not calling a push out. I've run into some players who would call a foul for what you just did."

BJ,
Tap, tap, tap. Words to live by; and not just in pool. You would fit right in here in Betmore's Basement.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question and im not out to make enemies i asked the TD aferwards and i guess it's like a house rule there just think they should mention that before the tourny
