Odam cue Szamboti blank

I'm not sure about authenticity, but is it just me or are the "pilots" on the shafts overly long? I really didn't pay attention to them until I looked at the picture of the pin and the depth of the pilot in the joint.

The cue is probably utilising a Blank that Odom bought from Palmer when they close shop... This looks evidently one of those reverse splice blanks that Palmer used on their Model J cue. As far as i know Palmer made most of the J blanks but some they bought from Gus Szamboti. The Szamboti blanks had normally longer and more even pointwork. This is as far as my knowledge goes :p , but my bet is this cue used a palmer blank not Szamboti's.... but what would i know, the best person to answer this question is Mr Palmer, Chris Tate himself so will someone page for him on the PA?

I would bet that it is a Gus blank. It's my understanding that most of these reverse splices that Palmer used from 1970-on came from the Szambotis. Also, uneven points won't necessarily rule a a blank out....it all is dependent on how the forearm was joined to the handle and then turned down. Seen them even, way off, and various stages between.

Nice

Either way that is a sharp cue! Looks like a Szam blank but I wounder why so low? Nick

Well I guess yor right it really dosen't matter. I've started the bidding just based on the fact that I think it's a nice looking cue. If it turns out to be a zam blank that will just be a bonus.

Guess most feel that it's kind of like an ivory-handled Joe Blow. Now, if it was a Szamboti blank Searing or Tascarella.....that's another story.

Jim Odom

Jim is a friend of mine and I have pictures of this cue before he finished it, I will call him this weekend and ask him, but I think he makes his own forearms. I will post the pictures this weekend.

I agree with you but that would also make it a 2-3 thousand dollar cue that would be out of reach for a lot of people. I think that this cue offers a really nice package for it's current bid price.

heres the pix

The cue looks very simular but the ring work is different, here it is anyway. He makes excelent cues. Hes also in the 3rd edition of the blue book.

Just saw auction for this cue on Ebay. What do you all think. How would you tell for sure if it's a Szamboti blank?

I can't tell by looking at it, but probably is a Szamboti blank since he has a note from Palmer to that effect, and it looks like one but the points are pretty short (how a cue is turned affects the length of the points too). It is very difficult to distinguish a Szamboti built one from a Palmer, since Palmer gave Gus their examples to copy. For that reason, when I look at a cue, I try to focus on the quality of the blank rather than who built it.

Odom is a newer cue maker who is now listed in the new Blue Book page 561. He has the distinction of building the only replica I've ever seen of a Model M Palmer - looked like it was hand cut on a band saw.

We all know the cue maker's name and rep make all the difference in the value. He is probably better known in regionally in the Texas area, but if his name is not recognized nationally, the value will suffer.

Chris

Ps. By the way, I think he did a nice job with the design. It looks like a modern cue with some "retro" touches.
