I knew Steve Cook well. I first met him when I came to Tampa from New York twenty-six years ago. I met him in a bar one afternoon. We played some 8-ball on the bar box for $5 and a beer and I beat him most of the games. I had no idea who he was. After bar hopping with him and a friend of mine until the wee hours of the morning we stopped in a little poolroom in Tampa.
While we were sitting at the little bar their I said straight pool was really my game on a big table. After some negotiation we settled on him giving me 30 on the wire to 100 for a $100. He beat me 100 to about 80. Of course I wasn’t satisfied, I had to try him again. This time he gave me 50 on the wire to 100 for $200. I broke, left a combo in the pack and he ran 100 and out.

He wasn’t the only one to catch me when I first came to Tampa. Buddy Hall got me, C. M Lee, and Ray Martin got me also. I beat a woman pro in St Pete (can’t remember her name right now) and someone called the Glove or the hand. One of them names. I didn’t have a clue who I was playing back then.

I grew up on Long Island and my dad owned a poolroom their. I played on our home table until I was old enough to play in the bars and poolrooms. My mistake was never going off the island to play. I guess their weren’t many real good players on the island, because I won money all over the island before I came to Tampa. Those were the days.

I also knew Steve Cook very well. You may have been talking about the Journey's End bar which was a block down the street from his home (though there many others he liked, including the Green Parrot and the Porthole).Gene "The Mighty Glove" Catron was one of Steve's very good friends also and was Steve's roomate for awhile. Gene and I were friends for 30 years and I spoke with him right up until the time of his death. It was great to see Buddy, Ray, Steve, Gene and a host of other top players playing in the local tournaments here in Tampa, though Gene seldom played any longer due to leg problems. Gene Catron had been featured on many TV shows doing his trick shots with multiple balls & tables and thousands of dominoes, which he first attempted and perfected when he manager of a late nate club in Fat City (a New Orleans suburb) nearly 30 years ago. He was a frequent guest on the David Letterman Show. I can't think of what female Pro you may be speaking of. Any clues, age, race, height, weight, etc. It wasn't Ming Ng was it ? Almost all of the top females have been through here at one time or another. What years are you talking about ?

(back to the Masters on TV)

The bar I met Steve in was the Porthole. Mike the bouncer was a good friend of mine there. ( Maybe not as I'm sure he knew who Steve was lol ). The poolroom was just down the street toward Town N Country. The woman pro was from St Pete. This was in the early 80's. I would say she was abound 18 yo. She had a sister that played also. I played The Glove in a bar on Nebraska in Tampa. Johnnyt

Is Mike the bouncer that was shot through the wooden door to the back of the club (by the band area) ? The Porthole has been gone for 13 or 14 years now. Maybe you're thinking of Corrine or Bonnie Hoffman a redhead. There used to be small poolroom just down from The Porthole with a handful of tables called Hans and Steve tended bar there for awhile. We used to play euchre (sp) poker there.

(of course I don't drink anymore)
Yes it was one of the Hoffman's. I believe the bouncer that got shot was Lurch. A guy about 6' 6" or more that looked like Lurch on the Adam's family. There was no bar in this little poolroom. I think your thinking of Hahns on waters. Johnnyt PS. I gave up the booze too. I was getting too old to have too big a mouth for such a little guy.

Smorgass Bored or Johnnyt (or anyone else) you guys were in Tampa about this time. I took these pictures at Bill Stigels pool hall in about 1978 do you recognize any of them?

Cheers
