Old and New Southwest

Hi,
Is there any difference in the hit between a Franklin-era Southwest and a new Southwest... eg. 2001?? Just wondering if the Southwest cues have changed in anyway since the passing of Jerry Franklin. Thanks for any input.

Kai

For one thing, a majority of Franklin-era Southwest cues came with Micarta ferrules. Most of the newer Southwest's ferrules are linen or ivory. Players and collectors love micarta Southwests. The hit of micarta is very unique and I've played with a Southwest with micarta. The hit is very solid and stiff and the best way I can describe it is that the cue seems to want to keep on going, almost like it wants to shoot through the cue ball!

Also, not sure of what weight your use to playing with, but to my knowledge, it is very difficult to find Southwest cues (both old and new) at 19oz or lighter. The majority that have been made and that are out there are usually 19.3 and heavier.

The quality of the wood on older cues may sometimes be a bit better. A friend of mine went to the SW shop a few years ago. He told me Laurie told him that good wood is getting harder and harder to come by. Even if that's true, the difference in hit is pretty much insignificant. Post franklin-era SW play awesome, like the Franklin Era SW.

i have an 80's SW , and the template for the cue is different. it has a coke bottle feel, where the grip gets kinda fat.

I've owned about 20 South West cues and have 6 now. I can't feel any consistent difference between the old and new South West cues. I currently have two that I just love the feel. One is Franklin era the other is 2001.

jimS,,,,if any of the 6 you still own were built in the 80's, feel the back half of the grip. mine "bulges"(gets thick) a bit, whereas a newer 2001 cue has a pretty standard taper in the butt. maybe it's just the one. however,,,i DO know that kershenbrock's original template for his cue was different than the SW today, but i don't know when the design changed.

Do you notice if the type of wood used makes any difference in the way that it feels. Such as ebony and birdseye or cocobolo and goncola alves?
