The layout below only shows the balls involved. I had 6 left on the table but the other 3 made no difference. We were hill/hill and my opponent was running balls like mad, however I noticed he would miss a key shot and blow the game. In this instance he broke and ran to the 8 and left the 8 in no mans land as pictured. I could have made the balls but I was really uncomfortable with the entire run so I remembers what Larry Schwartz said about having lots of balls left on the table. Play safe. This worked out better than I imagined because the 13 ball came off the rail and sat on the cue ball. The next shot he took (out of frustration) caused him to scratch. One of the best safties I ever played.

I'm always preaching safties to my teammates. The are an aggresive-shooting bunch of folks. Even when there isn't a decent shot on the table they're looking to pocket a ball some kind of way. Take the percentage shot even if it is a safety is what I tell them. Then I go back to my chair and sit down and watch them sell-out by trying some shot that is low percentage even for the very best of shooters. My saying is "Don't make the mistake, force your opponent into one."

Ball-in-hand is always good. Scratching on the 8-ball is even better (in certain leagues).

You know Neil, I was actually going to to this but it was hill/hill. All he would have gotten were nightmares ;)
 
I think I qualify as a old dog, I'm 59. I recently learned a new mind set, don't kill off your soldiers during the end game. Sort of what you did or didn't do in your diagram.
