Back in the 70's & 80's I played in Omaha. I wonder where the fellows are who helped teach me how to play. Are they still with us? Do they still play? Are they on AZB? Do others on AZB know these fellows? Part of getting old I guess and looking back through the window of my life. For those of you who may know the old Omaha players does anyone have info on the following? Dave Bishop, Stewart Bishop, Stanley Phimple, Buffalo, Kim Shupe, Larry Shupe, Jimmy Shannon, Tommy Gonzales, Mike Highland, Mike Long , Tommy Weinderfeller,or any other players from that era? Curiosity I reckon but worth the asking I suppose.

Dave Bishop passed away at least 6 years ago.
Saw Stewart Bishop a couple of years ago.
Buffalo (Stan Wilson) is also deceased.
Tommy Weidenfeller is still around and I see him a couple of times a year.
I haven't seen Jim Shannon in years.
Mike Highland (sp) still around but virtually NEVER plays.
Larry Shupe is a good friend and still plays some.

I appreciate the update. I am saddened by the losses. I am however gladened to know some are still around and at least one who still plays. I used to do insulation and windows for Geno many years ago :D Come spring I aim to make a trip to Omaha. I left over 20 years ago. It would be nice to see who's left.

I played with most of them at the Saddle Creek Bar.

Glad to see the up-dates.

That was a pretty stout field back then. Use to see all these guys when the Midwest 8 Ball Tournament Finals was held a Poeny Park. That's still the best tournament I've ever played in. Lost it's appeal when they moved it out of there. Had a great time every year.

old friends

Those guys were the biggest part of my pool lineage. I started off in Hawaii w/ a fellow named Bobby Newman outta Grand Rapids Mi. coaching me, got a few pointers from the local Phillipinoes. I went to Dallas got some help from Steve Hines, Junior Slipstroke, Adam and a few others. Then I went to Omaha, lived there 12 years. These were the guys I spent all my time with who realy taught me how to play. I played leauge with all of them at different bars, & of course we gambled afterwards. I don't remember the name of the bar we played out of at 42nd & L st. The Wooden Apple, Akromis bar, Blue Danube & many others. For a while I lived at a place called The San Antonio Inn (Previously the oak Creek Inn). We had 2 bar boxes & after the bars closed in Council Bluffs the players & gamblers would show up around 2-3 am and play & gamble until well after sunrise. Got a lot of action, the owner a wise guy named Tommy Williams (the place was a money laundering operation for the mob lol ) would back me whenever I wanted to play which was every day. So I got a lot of time playing with these guys & it really developed my game.Sometimes me & Dave would play at Illusion Lounge 100 or more games in a row. If nobody showed up we would just keep playing each other. It was a great place to come up playing pool. Back then Omaha had a host of strong players & gamble was everywhere. It is obvious I have very fond memories of Omaha and the players I knew. I too remember Poeny park & I agree it was a fabulous tourneyment. I hope Omaha's pool environment is alive, healthy & thriving today as it was way back then. Y'all have a wonderful day.
