Old meucci original. I had no idea

People always said newer meuccis were bad or not as good as the older ones. They didnt hit like they should etc. etc. I've shot with plenty of different sticks including predator, customs, joss, schon, etc. and none of them seemed to be that exciting to me so I stuck with my 10 year old meucci. Well the common thing I've always heard is Meucci Originals were really good. I had never shot with one before but heard a ton about them.

Last night I bought Bill's Meucci Originals MS-3 Road Agent. I could barely test it out as the house was packed and i got in on one game and only got to shoot out of 2 safes with an unchalked 25 year old tip :D. Then I got to hit 4 balls after the game. I figured what the hell and bought it. All of it was straight and in near mint condition. I took it to a different pool hall that wasnt so busy to hit some balls with it and man theres really a difference in the older sticks and the newer ones today. That thing was so consistent I could put as much english as I wanted and it still did what it was supposed to. I on the other hand didnt do what I was supposed to because I was compensating like I had to with my gambler 2. They hit soooo well I really cant believe it. Theres no hollow feel. Theres no uneasy feeling to the hit at all.

I was just thorougly impressed and felt I had to post it. I really just had no clue how well the older meuccis really hit. I just have to get used to a 20oz cue (that's really heavy for a lil guy) and get used to the feel of it and trust the shot so I can run out again. I didnt think a tip that old would still work so well. I just used a tapper to put some holes in the tip and rough it up slightly and it held chalk like it was supposed to. Not 1 miscue or anything all night. Night and day from my script meucci gambler 2 thats for sure.

You may be able to change the weight

You may be able to change the weight. I have a Meucci from the 90s, and it has the scripted
logo. There is a weight adjustment kit available, there always seems to be one on ebay. I bought
one of these a couple years ago, and it was very nice to be able to experiment with different weights.

I'm not sure if the weight bolts from your much older cue are a different size, so you will have to
research this.

Unfortunately, I left the little bag of weights behind one night in a poolroom, and when I called them
an hour later when I got home, they were gone. They could easily have been mistaken for a
bag of some kind of drugs, etc., and I had a feeling they would not still be there when I called.
 
Well bill said before he brought it he tried to take it out to drop it down to what I'm used to but he said he needed 4 arms to turn it. It was in there so tight he couldnt budge it. I didnt want him or anyone to force it out as I didnt want to damage a perfect shape collectable cue. I can get used to a 20 oz cue. I just have to hit with it for a bit.

I know that feel very well. I have over 100 Meucci Originals in my pool Q collection. At home I shoot with many of the ones that aren't new. I have yet to find a Meucci Original without that great solid hit/feel.

One of my favorites is one I only paid around 225. It has the same ringwork/joints as the Buddy Hall 5 Rifleman so it is pretty old (70s). I saw it on eBay a couple years ago with another Q in the same auction. I bid, but not enough as together they went for around 800. I really wanted that Q, but not the other newer one, as I had never seen one like it before and could not find any info on it. About 3 months later it came on again by itself. The seller stated he had bought the pair, but wanted the other Q. I was thrilled.:) He described this one as a well used Q in poor condition. In the pic u could c the uncovered wrap and a bare area with many torn Irish linen strings hanging off it. Looking pretty sad. It had white diamonds in the black butt sleeve with black Centaurs (a running horse body with a human torso and head shooting a bow) within the diamonds. The forearm was black with white, diamond shaped spear points. I assumed the black and white were plastic. I guess when he said it was well used and in poor conditon it turned most people off. There were only 3 bids on it and I got it.

Now for my surprise. When it arrived, I was shocked to find only 1 very tiny little nick in it. The only thing wrong was it needed a new wrap. As I looked, the white looked like it had grain. Upon closer inspection in the sunlight, I discovered the the large white diamonds in the butt and spear points in the forearm were ivory, not white plastic. :eek: Then I found that the very black forearm and Centaurs also had grain, it was the blackest ebony I had ever seen. :eek: There is no finish on the Q, just hand rubbed paste wax.

After installing a new wrap and some paste wax, I took it to Valley Forge and showed it to Bob Meucci and Steve Lomax (2 of the most knowledgeable Meucci folks). Steve probably has the largest Meucci collection in the world. Neither had ever seen one like it before. Indeed it was ivory and ebony and they thought it must have been a custom ordered 1 of a kind. So instead of a cheap black and white plastic Q, I now had a (probably) 1 of a kind custom ivory and ebony Q in almost as new conditon. Straight as an arrow and hits like a ton of bricks. Wow. :cool: My lucky day.

I agree on posting the pics of it. That sounds awesome. 100 originals.. shesh. I just now got to shoot with one. I've never even seen one in person before. Kinda neat to be shooting with a cue as old as me hehe. I plan to use it for many years to come.
 
Now if you'd like to see a Meucci that plays better than any that you've tried, try this....
Take a Meucci red dot sneaky, change the little pin to a big 3/8-10 or Radial, change the hollow plastic ferrule to melamine or better & install a Kamui or Sniper tip. Now you have the best hitting Meucci in the world. I know, I've built several this way and they honestly do play as well as about anything you can buy.;)
 
Lol i'm so dumb with cues I cant even put my own tip on (although I wish I knew how). I wont ever change anything :p I wouldnt be opposed to trying someones modified like that though.
 
don't change a thing, cub.....opinions are like azzholes and most of them stink.

keep the cue Original , there is no improvement in changing a pin on the older Meuccis....5/16-18 pins give a better feel with the flat-faced joint on the cue and you have a lot of wood-to-wood contact there, also. j :)

If you reread my post I did not tell him to do anything to his original. I clearly said "take a red dot sneaky". Also...if you think that a Radial or similar big pin does not provide more feel than a 5/16-18 then there is no need for me to argue with your mindset. I guess bias-ply tires work better than modern radials too. Makes you wonder why so many of the top custom makers only use big pins though instead of the little Meucci pin.;)
 
The original black dot shaft was better than the 2nd gen as far as hitting but it freaking splintered. Meucci has obviously shot downhill at a fast pace. I still use my red dot sneaky pete and it's my favorite cue and I've shot with just about everything.

I don't own a digital camera, but my daughter has one. I'll call her and c if she has time to take a couple of pics of my Centaur Q. Somehow I managed to post pics of one of my Dominiak Qs (I have 4 and just ordered one custom made) a couple years ago and I hope I can repeat the process. :confused: Here is a link to that Q, a real beauty. :cool:

Someone saw my post and emailed me about a Meucci Jim Rempe 5 (The Castle Walls). I told him about a Jim Rempe that few know exists and even fewer have seen. I've been told there were 50 made, it is the Meucci Jim Rempe signature Q. Most think there are only 5 in the series. I will take both Qs in one pic. Here is a post to the Jim Rempe Series showing the 5.

makes me wonder why the older Meuccis shot better than the "new", "modern" cuemaker's sticks.,,,,makes me wonder why Mike Erwin, who worked for Meucci, makes such an excellent shooting stick and still uses the 5/16-18 pin....

really it comes down to subjectivity on the shooters part as to which cue shoots "better".

I was simply trying to keep cub from transferring your "sage advice" onto his Meucci Original and ruining the cue and devaluing it.

some tend to take advice literally and some ignore it,,,I hope cub is from the latter school. ........... j :rolleyes:

Are the Jim Rempe 1's worth anything? I have one that was signed by him about 12 years ago.

The Jim Rempe 1 was the least expensive Q in the series and still are today. On Flebay they go for 250-350 +- depending upon condition. I'm sure Jim Rempe's signature on your Q will get a little action.

My daughter finally emailed the pics she took of my Meucci Centaur and the Jim Rempe signature Q. I have a very old :( slo puter so it will take a while to download and I am going away today. I hope to get the pics up soon.
