First, let me say I enjoy this forum and have lurked for awhile now and just finally registered.

I just picked up this old Schon a few months ago. The finish was horrible when I first seen it but could see the poitential in it. I sent it to JAckson Custom Cues and they painstakenly refinished every inch of this cue. @ coats of 2 part Epoxy finish, new Extra hard Le Pro tip and a Textured Black Leather Wrap.

Cue is breathtaking for a simple 4 point. The inlays are razor sharp and within 1/16" or less of one another.

I am trying to guesstimate the approximate age of the cue right now. Best I have heard is Cisa 1981-1982.

cant wait to see it........i have an older schon i recently picked up too......mines prob a late 80s

just curious, why did you send it to jackson to redo and not back to schon?
 
Resonable question about whom I chose to have refinish the cue.

I chose Jackson cues because I am a distributor of thier cues and see the quality of their cues on a daily basis. I have a few of their cues and appreciate the fine attention to detail they pay when they manufacture a cue and figured they would pay the same attention to detail when they refinish one.

Since I now have this cue back in my possesion, I see I was correect with my expectations. The attention to detail is impecable, and I am a stickler when it comes to detail. The finish is nothing less than perfect.

This is one of my Jackson cues. This is a #7 with a textured leather wrap added to it. I love this cue....

Your Schon is an R series Schon. The dashed collar is the identifying aspect of the cue. It was made within the first couple of years they were in business.

Actually, I sent a picture of the stick to Evan Clarke, and spoke with him on the phone today. Acording to him, and he would know, it is a Circa 1986-1987 cue and the colar is called a "Stitch Collar".

I have a 3rd shaft on order for the cue that will match the collar and will play @ 60" length...

The Blue Book says that the dashed decorative rings give a hint about the cue being full-spliced on the older Schons. Anyone heard about this ?

This is accurate. They only did the dash for 1-2 years, then switched to the silver ring.

Acording to Evan, he still uses the Stitch rings on a few cues he still makes to this day and usually always has quite a few laying around the shop.

Although I personally have never seen another Schon with this same ring design.

I am and was excited to hear he still has them available as my only thought was to buy an unfinished Predator and have itr finished to imulate the Schon shaft, or have Schon custom make me one if they did not make it any longer.

To say I am a happy man right now is an extreem understatement!

All I am saying is that I was told per Schon they "Still" use that ring to this day and always have them instock because they still use them.

The partial credit I mentioned was because "My stick" was only made for 2 years in the mid 80's.

On ebay now is a stitch ring R-8 dice model. Its IMHO the nicest of the series.

I have never seen a new Schon with the stitch ring, they keep stock to supply the older cues with shafts, IMHO. When I saw there booth at VF last year I don't recall a single stitch ring cue there. Maybe they do still make them, but it must be a rare occasion.

The rings alone will not date a Schon. Even during the years where the stitch rings were standard, the nickel-silver rings could be special ordered, and the stitch rings could be ordered anytime like you say - even now. I have an early Schon with the nickel silver rings special order and a receipt where they actually charged extra for them.

Here are the giveaways to date a Schon. The older shafts have a linen based joint and shaft collar (you can see the fabric though the black phenolic). Then of course there are the sharp spliced points, but also the sharp inlays. The earlier Schons had both sharp points and sharp inlays. In the late 1980's as they switched over to pantograph, sometimes you got sharp points but rounded inlays.

When you order your new shaft, I suggest you ask them to leave the logo off. I have some stitch ring shafts with for an old R-14 where they put the logo on the shaft, which of course wasn't done until well after the cue was made, so it doesn't look too authentic. I also suggest you send the cue in for the fitting, to make sure the collar fits well and the piloted part of the shaft seats properly. They do not have the old linen phenolic material any longer, so your shaft collars will be solid black and will not match your joint collar perfectly. I would like to say that schon still makes a very nice shaft. I like their ivory ferrules and I think it's worth the extra for them.

Damn, the Blue veneer does not show up in the picture at all. Too bad as that Blue veneer is breathtaking in person :mad:
