I have been wanting to get back into billiards again. I had a crappy no-name table growing up, but it did get me interested in playing. No that my son has grown up a little (12Yrs old), I want to get a table for us to play on. I know everyone likes the Diamonds, but I cannot afford that. I have my search narrowed down to 3 tables and wanted some input on my choices.

1. Valley Cougar XD-5 that looks to be in great shape and I can get this for $600. 7'

2. Olhausen Reno - a couple of years old that looks new - $1000. 8'

3. Olhausen 30th Anniversary - Don't know the specific model....are there a whole range of them? - again, this one is in like new condition- $1500. 8'

Going into a 14' X 19' basement room....combination short and regular sized cue sticks are cool with me.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Here's a good thought. Kids. equipment, kids friends/equipment, I'd get the Valley, and does it have the coin mechanism still. Reason I ask, is when you go to sell it, you can approach bars/poolrooms and probably turn it quickly. Also, the bar box/lay it on its side on too a small dolly, take the four legs off and roll it anywhere. To me, a no brainer, if the wife is involved with color and decor, I'd still talk her into the Valley/one piece slate/cheap, he's a kid. And if the pooliscool wears off, probably won't be a big deal....three piece slate table are. You could level the Valley yourself, the others, thats part of the ''puttin the table together'', and then finally leveling it. I had a Black top Valley cougar when my girls were five and seven.

I don't have an opinion on which table to choose. But I have some free advice. Most home tables are basically unused because many people have romantic ideas that they would play pool but don't. The Valley table may have been in a bar at some time, so it may have seen substantial use (this is not necessarily a negative). Remember that transportation and installation will still cost money, perhaps more than you might think. Investigate before buying and make sure you are happy with the total cost. Will you want new cloth? Which brand of cloth? For the Valley, will you need new rails?

You should not need a short cue with any of these tables if the room is a full 14' wide.

Have fun. Good luck.

I will still be using this table after he goes off to college, so I want to make sure that what I get will play decent. I will never be playing competitively, but I would like a nice table...no need for a GREAT table. Leaning toward the Olhausen due to this.

Also, my son and his friends are respectful of other things....they use one of my nice 5.1 surround entertainment systems for their Xbox's and PS3s with out issue.

Olhausen's will play nicer than the Valley, correct?
