One game against Segal

I was Mikes assistant and translator for a couple of days when he was in Japan, so I got to spend lot's of 1 on 1 time with him talking about everything from pool to life in general. Needless to say, I throuroughly enjoyed my time with him. However, I will admitt that Mike has very strong opinions about certain players, cue makers, and the business in general and he's not afraid to share his thoughts.
The club that I worked at also hosted his exhibition where he did the traditional trick shot and challenge match routine. He played our house pro, who was probably a top 30 player on the Japan tour and beat him easily. However, during the challenge match portion, he played a girl in a race to three, and when she went up 2-0 on him, this was the first time I saw Mikes smile and confident personality. He started playing his best game safeties and all and ended up coming from behind to win. It was funny to watch the girl give him a run like that though.

I forgot about that. Mike was talking about his time in Japan.. Very interesting stuff..

Do you know how illegal it is to have Ivory in Japan

For the record, Mosconi was no jewel sometimes either. I saw him in person a couple of times and he came off like an arrogant jerk both times. Grady has been one of the better ones I've seen in such situations, also Tom Rossman, Danny D., Babe Cranfield, and some others whose names escape me at the moment.

I noticed that Bobby Chamberlain was at Big Daddy's in Glen Burnie last night right at the end of Mike Sigel's 14.1 seminar. Was he there to challenge him again after Mike already said he hadn't been playing straight pool? If so...not a class move on Bobby's part in front of a paying crowd!

Wedge: I don't think Bobby asked Mike to play again. There was no visible friction between the two and I'm pretty sure they all went down to Whispers to have dinner together.

Mapman,

I think you're mistaken. I just spent the afternoon with Sigel. He openly admits that he doesn't play straight pool anymore. Only practices for the World Tournament each year and hasn't done well there. I would put my money on Bobby without question if they were to play in a couple days.

Give Sigel a couple months and it might be another story.

Andy

Hi Andy,
I'm just going by what I was told by Dan who is the one taking him around. He said this to me in an email,

"...Mike is most confident in straight pool . he said he thinks he can beat anyone in the world in straight pool right now. And he feels farily confident in 10 ball..."

If Mike really said that, I would tend to believe it. Dan also told me that Mike is practicing every day and that after a recent practice session with Archer, Johnny said, "Man, you're playing like you were 20 years ago."

You do realize that they call Mike Sigel "The Mouth", right? Of course he can beat anyone in the world - he told me so himself!

I like Dan but he's clearly biased since he's taking Sigel around. I think Dan is very impressed with the World Champion titles that Sigel has. I'm impressed too to meet and talk with the guy that has had so much success. He's also a good entertainer and is very enthusiastic about straight pool.

Sigel is playing all over Europe, Egypt and hopefully Dubai the next couple of months - all 10 ball so that's the game he's been practicing exlusively. We'll see how he does.

I can't stand that high-rolling move, its so chicken sh!t! So many players do that and it gets me fired up. Are you too good to play for only $500. If you don't want to play, so no. We had a few talkers around here who would do that. You call them up and say you wanna play $100 sets... They won't play for less than $500/set. I don't have a problem with not wanting to play a $5 set, fine. I get that but a race to 5 for a hundo or 2? Play it or don't be don't be a chicken sh!t try to high-roll like a D-bag.

Sorry for the vent and abraisive language. High-rolling just bugs the deuce out of me.

The last I heard was that although Japan had a pretty passive stance when it comes to ivory, lately they've been trying to crack down a bit as a direct result from the US to honor the CITIES agreement. However, because the Japanese use personal and highly decorative (typically ivory) family name stamps instead of a signature when authorizing anything that we in the US would use a signature for, Japan has always had certain agreements that allow them to bring in a certain amount of ivory yearly to use in the making of these family stamps.
If it were me, although I think most likely you could sneek something through, I wouldn't risk trying to get ivory into Japan in the form of inlays on a cue.

In 1989 I befriended this kid in Naples,Fl. Can't remember his name but he would collect autographs . Telling me he got this one or that one. I told him about Mike Sigel , his record ect., that to me, that was the autograph he would want. I moved to Georgia shortly after. It was there that while at work my wife called me and said Mike Sigel called our house to talk to me..after telling her not to mess with me while I was working she got mad gave me the phone no. and hung up. ..well I called , Mike was at David Howard's place in Jax. He got on the phone and told me of this kid who got his autograph , telling him what a great fan I was of his...called a total stranger out of the blue..Two years later when I got back to Key West I called him at his house in Baltimore. I was raising money for M.S. and asked if he would waive his fees for attending which he did. It was a great tournament and Mike Sigel showed more than his pool skills. To me he will always stick out in my mind as a class act...

Sigel and chamberlain

Ok guys or maybe i could say railbirds haha.my name is bobby chamberlain and i wont hide behind my user name.this is exactly how it went down in rockville at orange ball billiards between mike sigel and myself.i will first start by saying i am not a legend killer or shit talker.mike started to talk to me and we were having you know the sigel conversation and his friend dan asked where do i practice at and i told him and also said i would play anyone some sets of staright pool there and mike said to me what do i like to play and i told him i would play him some straight pool even and he asked me for how much and i asked him how much did he have that he could bet and he really wouldnt answer so i asked him to play a race to 250 balls for whatever he wanted to bet and he again asked how much and so i really wanted to play and didnt want to high roll him and told him for either $500 or $1,000 and he said no way, however he said he would call trudea and have him back him to play sets for $25,000 and ofcourse i just brushed it off and that was it.

Thanks,

bobby chamberlan

Mr.mapman

bobby has no chance to beat sigel in a race to 250 straight pool. It's sigel's best game and he's one of the best straight pool players in history. Bobby's a rising talent, but they're not in the same league. 9 ball, 10 ball, or maybe 8 ball, bobby's got a good chance. Not straight pool unless it's a race to 100 and bobby gets the first good opportunity.
thanks for all the comments.everybody is entitled to their own opinion no matter what it is.
