One Hour Practice

I only have one hour a day to practice 5 days a week. Here is what I was going to start doing.

Day 1 - Choose 3 shots that come up often in 9 ball and that I don't feel confident with and practice those for 20 minutes each.

Day 2 - Kinister's short game drill

Day 3 - Kinisters medium game drill

Day 4 - Kinister's long game drill

Day 5 - Play the 9 ball ghost.

I think this will be pretty effective. At least better than just throwing the balls out and banging them around for an hour. Any thoughts/suggestions?

I'd save 15-20min at the end to play some racks. Just so you are getting a nice dose of all the shots needed for a match. It will keep you mentally fresh.

I would make my first 15 minutes all stroke & alignment drills before I started any ball pocketing......SPF=randyg

Great suggestions

Thank you to all for the suggestions so far. I will definitely incorporate them. I also figure that week to week I will need to change things up. Hopefully when Scott gets here next year he can set me up.

I second this. Doing drills for 30-40 minutes with hard focus is plenty, if you can do it 5 days a week. That should leave 20-30 minutes to just play, which is needed also. I don't think you can develop much game on drills alone; you have to play racks on a regular basis to make sure you're incorporating the skills that the drills are helping you develop into an actual pool game.

Randy,
What are some good stoke and alignment drills.

Each person has different needs. It's hard to say what's right for one would benefit another. One of the neat things about Pool School is your Mother Drills are all personalized. Sorry....SPF=randyg

Focus on what keeps your attention the most. Sometimes a certain drill will burn you out, others may spark your competitive juices. This can vary from day to day.

The moment you start to drift, do something else.

Drills are good, but just doing drills isn't enough I would divide the time in half. half an hour for drills half an hour of play.

Personally I change the game daily. 9 ball, 8 ball, straight pool, 1 pocket, and some form of a carom game. I like carom 8-ball ( I posted the rules here a week or so ago) all the games require a slightly different set of skills. you will never become a well rounded player if you always play the same game.

I agree with Randy. Alignment is so important. The mother drills will help the mechanical fundamentals. I also use stuff from Bert and Joe, and the old timers drills.

advice

All good points. My original post may have been a little misleading. I have one hour per day that I can practice, but I also go to two tournaments per week. Those tournaments allow more practice time and time to actually apply the practice to game situations.

I really appreciate all the advice. Thanks to all.
