Here is one of my more memorable matchs in my yesteryears of matching up, and the one and only time I ever took the stake money, tho one time I did have Daltons backer steal mine.
I was playing this Mexican road player in So. CA, he came in with his two buddies/stake horses. We started playing 9-ball on a big table, I knew he was a bar table player (I wasn't at the time) but he thought he'd try his luck (this was 30 years ago) and before long I had him stuck in the $400 range. During our match I could see he was good but had NO chance on a 9' table. What was annoying about this guy was everytime a situation came up where we should of 'flipped' a coin to determine the rule/rules in that situation he would always say NO COMPRENDO and take advantage of the situation, but you never argue with a sucker. He finally pulled up. He talked me into playing on the bar table, so I thought I would fire 1/2 of my winnings back at em. We put the dough on the light, played and he beat me. I put my cue away and him and his buddies were argueing about the stake money/it was still on the light. Now this was a tough white man's pool room and so I reached up and took the money and walked back to the bar and continued to monitor the 3 argueing till the player went to get the post and found it was gone. He came to me asking where the dinero was my reply NO COMPRENDO. If he hadn't been such a sleeze jerk/always trying to cheat me on the 9' table I would of never thought about it, but they left quietly and we all had a great laugh at their expense.
