one pocket beginner

Tom Wirth's "Controlled Agression" is pretty good. Lots of neat scenario's that let you think it through before revealing several solutions, and the middle section has some good drills.

Other than that, just play tough opponents. I'm still learning too, and I think the book has helped some. Good luck, one pocket can be an amazingly fun, but also aggravating game.

I'm an old player but new to one pocket. Recommendations for newby book/dvd? Thanks.

Watch as many YouTube One Pocket Videos as possible. You can learn a lot; especially the pro matches. Also, play different people. People who are at your level and slightly better than you. Should help your game....

Accu-Stats onepocket videos helped my game tremendously. The ones with Danny, Billy, and/or Grady were particularly helpful because they tend to point out what they feel are the correct shots (and why) before the players shoot them.

tom wirth book is great also videos of scott frost and grady Mathews are good any of the accu stats tapes are great to plus one pocket.org any utube videos with Shannon daulton scott frost and efren are great to watch and learn from

Controlled Aggression is a must have.
One pocket is a puzzle and Controlled A. helps the pieces fit faster. Welcome to the game. Always something new to learn. It's game in a game.

The aggravating game for perfectionists

Yes it is aggravating but the game teaches you to swim or sink. I think the way I approached it worked as well as anything Ive ever done. I broke the game down in pieces, I worked on my break for several weeks a bit at a time while I worked on certain banks shots particularly the back cut bankshot and Passovers. Each little area of the game is a specialty area and eventually it will all come together then you work on whitey. You have to get him safe or the rest of it, just doesn't work out too well. Good luck.

Books are great, but I totally agree with this. No better way to learn than watching video matches.

If you really want to get better, search up all the accu-stats videos with Bill Incardona commentating. I personally enjoy the ones with Danny D. along side but ... Grady is great as well.

I'd find little value in matches with kids commentating or matches with no commentating.

Depending on your general playing ability, controlling the CB is very important. In one pocket it depends many times on tangent line hits with slow spinning english to place the CB.

Another recurring situation is clearing multiple balls from your opponents area. Look for situations where you can hit the first OB to be cleared "straight on" so the CB can stop, sending the object ball into an angle to the second contact ball, thus clearing the two balls while dead stopping the CB. ( or hitting the CB slightly above center and firmly, clearing the two OBs and slow rolling the CB ahead slightly.

That comes up all the time .... Clearing balls while wacking the CB into the first ball on an angle will result in sending the CB running around.

Bottom line, you need to control the CB.

Also, learn about the carom line of the CB by aligning to the imaginary back side of the OB to be hit. A valuable tool that can be very accurate.

So ... spend some cash on videos .. and watch ... re-watch ... listen to commentary and observe table layouts.

You will get much more bang for your buck with videos IMO as well.

Some of the best I ever had were two VHS tapes made by Bill Marshall, aka: Willie Jopling. Lot's of how-to on the fundamentals of One Pocket.
Check the internet. They may be available on DVD.

P.S. Mr. Marshall passed several years ago, but I did have the pleasure of shaking his hand at the '05 DCC. He was a true Southern Gentleman.

tom wirths book one pocket a game of controlled aggression is a must have book for any one pocket player of any level

Both of these are great suggestions. In fact, Tom Wirth is a regular poster on OnePocket.org, especially in "What Would You Do?" threads.

I especially recommend the WWYD threads there for learning one pocket tactics and shot choices - just search for threads with "WWYD" in the title. You'll even see my name in some of them (and will quickly learn not to do what I did.) :)

The hardest thing to learn in one pocket: patience.

I like Kohler's UpScale One Pocket too.

I would also add... tune up your banking & kicking skills... they will be needed.

Toms book is the best on the subject. Yes, better than shots and moves, and winning one pocket. I also recommend Billy Incardona's Winning One Pocket instructional video, and the accustats tournament footage.

That's a good point on the books. Tom is a great player and he gives you the insights into 1P thinking. Controlling the QB is so critical because you can't always shoot for your hole. I've been playing 1P predominantly for 15 years and still have tons to learn. You never really stop learning

Excellent info given you in your thread

Heed all and learn a wonderful game

One Pocket is the best pool game ... period

I agree with watching youtube videos but would start by watching Chris Gentile matches. He plays a more conservative game and chooses the right shots most of the time. Then move onto more aggressive players like Scott Frost.

Scott Frost, Tom Wirth, Gabe Owen DVDs

Also get some great one pocket videos from Accustats, listen intently to the commentators while you focus on DVDS !!

I refer to that book as my "Guide to make friends and lose money in 1 shot"

The best thing I can tell you is to buy the following DVD from Accu-Stats...

http://www.1vshop.com/Accu-Stats/st...=Darren+Appleton+vs.+Shane+Van+Boening+(DVD)*

Incardona spends the entire match in the booth with Thorsten going over the subtleties of the game and Thorsten went on to win his next match after admitting he had no idea as to how to play the game.......

If you don't play the game the DVD will change you... If you play the game it will make you better.....
