One-Pocket Strategy Question

Another strat. thread turned woof fest, aye? Good to see things haven't changed since I've been gone.

Helfert, I'll be sure to try that the next time I'm in a pool hall. Sounds interesting.

safe??

i guess i am the only one who plays this shot this way.

it has come up a few times and i just roll up on the head ball.

The problem I have with this way of playing the shot is that if you don't hit the spotted ball perfectly full in the face, you probably sell out right there. Seems like a fairly high risk shot unless the table has no roll off to it at all and your stroke is dead straight.

thats not totally true, it is a speed shot so you need to know the table alittle. a fraction one way or the other won't affect the shot much.

as i had said earler i have used this shot a few times and so far (knock wood) i have yet to sell out.

On a decent table there is probably very little risk of selling out with that shot for most player. But the problem isn't how risky it is for selling out, it's that you haven't done anyhting.

Against a better player you've probably given your edge completely away with it and against a worse player you haven't really done anything but make the game longer.
If you're going to duck I'd much prefer the other duck mentioned in this thread - but I really don't care for ducking against any kind of player in this spot.

If they play better than me trying to force myself into more back and fourth moves with them is suicide. If they play worse than me (if that's possible) then maybe ducking by banking the bottom ball out isn't bad - maybe I'd shoot it if I was playing a much worse player and I felt I was executing aggressive shots really bad at that moment.

I would never be able to pull the trigger on this. Even on brand new equipment.
I have faith that the table will roll out, and i am going to sell out BIG TIME.

I have seen people play this shot, but to me, to actually roll this at the right speed so that the cue ball stops perfectly on the head ball is just asking for trouble.
If the table is off by a little, you are toast.

drawing the head ball

OK, 80% of the time I draw the head ball in and play the back ball two rails. We all know the reasons why.

The only reason I pass on this shot is equipment related. The table has to have the right ratio of fast cloth and lively rails to make it work. For example, on slow cloth with that requires a monster stroke to get the cueball draw to hold and slow cloth, I believe this shot to be too risky. Shooting with that much force with three moving balls and a power draw seems a poor choice, and at that speed even a slight mishit can be disastrous.

On the other had, on new fast simonis, you can shoot smoothly below center and play a nice finesse shot that is very high percentage with a good margin of error.

In other words, the equipment determines how hard the shot must be struck, thus determining whether it is percentage or not.
