One Pocket

Best posts in the thread.....some guy taught me high level one hole - was top three in the world - but I can't tell you what he told me because I am sworn to secrecy....hope that helps you.... and people wonder why pool can't get ahead.

Awesome, I will try you some with you giving up 15-4 then for $500 a game. I was only mentored by some guy in the bar we called Duckie. He gave me a little device called the Arrow and told me it would be all I ever need. To date the using the Arrow I am only about $46,000 down.

15-4? Thats it? I can't even count that high lol. I might suggest you get your CTE video and lock yourself in a room and not come out till you get A LOT better.

Nah, I was just kidding ( although Geese really did say that ). Anyway he said " kid, everytime you get to the table try to put a ball in the triangle ( your pocket within two closest diamonds ) and don't leave them a shot and you'll win almost everytime. Now not that I can always do this but when I do it works out pretty well. I know this sounds very simplistic but I believe the point was to play smart but also be aggressive as often as possible.

:-) If it wasn't for CTE I couldn't even ask for four balls.

Pretty sage advice....about along the lines of Mosconi's "don't miss". If only one pocket were that easy.

The way I took it was to stay aggressive and don't play scared. We've all seen the player that will play 50 safes in a row before even thinking about moving a ball towards his hole.

Part of the magic of one hole is to find that balance between offense and defense. When I played Cliff getting 10-4 Cliff would take fouls constantly just to insure the cue ball was trapped. He knew when I finally couldn't get out of the trap that he would easily run lots of balls and make up the fouls. It wasn't until I figured out that I needed to move all the balls up table and battle it out ball for ball to have a chance.

I wasn't ever going to outmove him trying to move balls to my pocket and leave him safe. He didn't care about rolling up to a ball a dozen times in a row if necessary. And if I took fouls right back.....so much the better for him when I need even more balls to win.

If I have one piece of advice for the op it would be to understand that one pocket is very deep and there is no real one way to play it. What I mean is that you will find people creating different moves on the fly and you will discover moves you never saw before. Just stay aware and consider possibilities beyond the first thing you see.

Thanks!

A BIG THANKS to all the helpful advice on One Pocket! I've been playing pool for 54 years and this game has me excited to play every chance I get. Trying to find that balance between offense and defense is billiards heaven or it can be billiards hell depending on how you want to look at it. I'm stoked about this game. If I were to purchase an instructional video of One Pocket, which one would be the most beneficial?

you should definitely get tom wirths book on one pocket controlled aggression
it can be brought to the pool room since its spiral bound
it gives you layouts to decide your shot and then discusses different options and what is the best responce
all along giving you a philosophy of how to approach the game
its been endorsed by bill incardona and scott frost

as for videos
power one pocket vol 1 and 2 by scott frost and grady matthews dvds on one pocket i would recommend

Absolutely bbb and Gold Crown! My book is the best book on One Pocket ever produced!
It puts "Up scale" to shame, and "Winning One Pocket" is a great book, but it focuses on stories far more than it does One Pocket theory. It is out of print, and if you can find one, be prepared to spend several hundred for a copy.

The endorsements keep coming in for "One Pocket: A Game of Controlled Aggression" In addition to Scott and Dr. Billy, Shannon Daulton, Brandon Shuff, Nick Varner, and a host of other top players have added their names to this list. The word is spreading world wide. Several books have been sold to the Netherlands, Norway, Croatia, Canada, and my latest sale was to a major force and top player in Denmark.

Controlled Aggression is a weapon. I have been learning one move a time a really feel improvement. I have Upscale OnePocket but do not like the book. The banking tracks look like a TV weather report...(multiple arrows going round and round). And the beginning of it wastes a lot of time. I started playing 1P about 2 years ago. I'm a person that cannot learn pool on my own. I need an instructor, some videos and good books. CA is a great book. I tell my local friends to buy it.....and I'll buy it from them if they do not like it. There is nothing not to like. And I think Tom would gladly take your phone call if you have any questions about anything in the book. Tom is all about the game.

THIS^^^ and I highly recommend getting Jay Helfert's full version of Danny Diliberto playing Ronnie Allen... and watch as much of Efren playing One Pocket as you can...
I recently watched Efren playing Corey... went down to the last game, hill/hill, Corey tries a risky shot, sells out, Efren runs the last three.

I was taught one pocket by a guy named The Mighty Geese. He was prob top three in the world. He told me the absolute best advice on one pocket I've ever heard before or since.

Geese was very superstitious. If something went wrong, he would look around and find "the black cat" guy that caused the problem. I was there once when he pointed to who he chose as his current target, when I provided the "Geese" with an old Indian luck chant.

Oh-Wa-Ta-Goo-Sy-Am. I told him that he needed to repeat this chant over and over again for it to work while steadily increasing the speed of the chat with each recitation.

It works for everyone, but it was especially effective for Geese. Try it for yourselves, you'll see. :D

HiJack time.... Tom you are a great teacher. Enjoyed the lesson Tues and I'm enjoying reviewing your book live and close up with you. My mind set is move balls into my quadrant....Trap /Catchers Mitt and off to the races as per Controlled Aggression.
Playing you is a great experience.. An education. I'm fortunate to have the opportunity. Frank

Hey John,

Thanks for the info. I'm just getting started with this game and there is a lot to learn. It's a whole different mindset. Making balls is almost an after thought from the defensive moves, especially if you are not breaking. Hope you and yours are well.

Everythings good here thanks. A break tip to keep in mind when playing. If you are scratching a lot or his ball is leaking out, move the cue ball out further away from the rail. You might not get as many balls on your side but you aren't selling out either. Come over to the other site and hang out with us old guys if you get a chance. The "what would you do" guys over there wrote some of those books...
