Hey guys,
This is just a note from one of your backers. If this U.S. Open trip really works out, we backers are going to need a little something in return (as Hannibal Lecter would say "quid pro quo Clarice" - of course comparing backers to Hannibal Lecter is just a little too close to the reality, so just forget I said that).

Before the tournament we would all love to hear a description of your game, how you learned, influences, equipment used, philosophy of life, strengths and weaknesses (credit card number and date of birth would also be appreciated by the identity thieves among the backers). How do you usually practice, and will you change anything in preparation for the Open?

I have no idea if any computers will be available at the Open for updates, but if you find out that there is such a thing as a pool groupie, we need to know immediately.

That was funny.

On a more serious note. Sure it would be great if you played well, but I think the important thing here is that you enjoy yourselves, maybe put out a word or two here and there if you get a chance to about our forum and bring back a couple of good stories to tell us.

Good luck

If they tell Scott Smith they are sponsored by az-billyards-dot-com he will announce this when he makes the player introductions.

If they tell him the background of how this came to be he will announce that too (he may already know if he lurks here)

and yes, stories would be nice :D

Of course the situation changes dramatically it one of you win! Then we don't expect to have to take up another collection to have all the contributors names engraved on the trophy. :D

I don't want you guys to feel any pressure so just go there and have a good time! I would request that if you do get knocked out, keep an eye on what's going on and keep us informed. We all love to hear the stories as I'm sure you're already quite aware of. Good luck guys! I can't go but this is a great alternative to going! I feel that my contribution was well worth it no matter how you do!!

Sure. I'll post some info here soon. I'll also be taking my laptop to Virginia, so I'll be able to post daily. Besides, it'll give me an excuse to go to Starbucks while I'm there. I mean, I *have* to go now because they have wireless access! ;)

Okay, you asked for it..........

I think my game would be best described as, "Damn, he shoots straight." The way I learned the game was playing with the best at Hard Times In Bellflower, Ca. I asked a lot of questions when I was first learning how to play and I took advice from everyone, whether they played better than me or not. Lil' Al Romero was a big influence on me because he had so much knowledge to share with anyone who asked and he's really a nice guy. He taught me the "little' things that help the game become so much easier, using the rails for position, defensive play, learn how to shoot opposite handed rather than the bridge, and mainly, to control my temper. Before learning how to play pool, I was a 200 plus average bowler and had been gambling since I was 13 in Pot games with guys that had been bowling for 30 years or more, so the gambling aspect of the game was nothing new to me. I knew what pressure was already because of this. My strengths, I believe, are my will to survive and the ability to adapt to whatever is thrown my way. My weaknesses, ha, too many to list. #1 weakness, I'm a drug addict in recovery. I'm not ashamed to admit that because I know where my recovery stage is and I know what my triggers are and how to deal with them when I am tested. My practice routine consists of a variety of things. Sometimes I just rack balls for 2 hours and break and try to control the CB to the middle of the table. Other times I just throw 5 balls out on the table with BIH and run out, over and over. I practice shots that I have trouble with at times, but not for long. I am currently exercising to lose weight and to build up my stamina for the Open because it will be a grind to stay focused throughout an event such as this. My credit card # is, 0000-0000-0000, because that's the amount it stays on at all times, LOL. Well, I hope that covers it cuz that's all I got. Oh, and I will tell everyone I talk to how I got there and before I leave, everyone will know about Azbilliards and everyone involved in making this happen. Thank you to all! Peace!

R.D.,
Now that's what we're talking about!!!!! That was $25 well spent. Thanks for the info, and good luck in the Open.

P.S.- please don't forget about that "pool groupie" update.

US Open

Best of rolls to both Jimmy and Rude Dog. Everyone deserves a break in Life, hope you guys get the most out of it.

Good luck to you and Jimmy. I'm sure you'll both do AZ proud. I can't get to the open to meet you guys, I wish I could. Don't let all this put any extra pressure on you, you owe us nothing but the assurance you'll give the best you have available at any given time. Boy will Earl ever be shocked when one of you two kick his butt, but I'm sure he'll be gracious about it. :D

I agree that its great that a bunch of strangers are getting together to promote a "U.S. Open experience" for some deserving players - the internet can be a great tool for bringing together people with a common interest. However, before we get all misty-eyed over our collective altruism, I will just say I think most of us just want to hear about the pool groupies (if the rumor is true, just think what that would do for U.S. Open entries next year - there might be so much interest they would have to start making pool skill a requirement for entry, instead of just ability to cough up the entry fee).

Hi Willebetmore, I can assure you that the two players have pool skills. Keith McCready has spoken for both of them. Melissa Herndon knows Jimmy M. and knows he is a player. We are not sending two bums. I like their attitude.
I have friends who can't beat me go every year, why, I don't know. Maybe they just like being part of the action. The more players, the more prize money. The more prize money, the more entrants. Just want to let you know, we ain't sending no "groupies" we are sending good players. Maybe we will send you next year, who knows where this might go.
Your friend, Purdman

Purdman,
Actually I know this. The "groupies" I am mentioning are of the female persuasion (and it isn't pool at which they are proficient ;) ). I know Kobe gets his share, why not the best pool players on the planet?? I am sure our horses are accomplished players and I can't wait to see how they do, and hopefully get an insider's view of the tournament.

I don't see anything wrong with sending a beginner - I am totally in agreement that there should NOT be a skill requirement to play. I think I probably will play next year, but I think I can scrape together the funds to send myself. If we send enough players, it is inevitable that an AZ'er will win (or at least throw a major tantrum which will get him some magazine cover exposure).

I haven't been posting in many of the US Open threads because, for starters, I didn't want to seem like I was lobbying for the group to send me. I thought it was a great idea to send a player to the US Open, and I was flattered that some people threw my name out there as one of the potential players to send, but, as I said early on, there are other good players in this forum, all of whom would be good people to send to the open. From what it looks like, and from what I'm being told in PM, John (Rude Dog) and I are going to be headed to Virginia. I've hesitated to say thanks because, again, I didn't want to give the impression that I was lobbying for the group to pick me, nor did I want to assume anything about who you guys would select. So, at the risk of doing either of those things, I would like to say thank you to all who are participating in this. To the people who hoped to send someone else, I hope I can play well enough, and represent the group well enough, that you will be satisfied with your donation. To the people who did select me, I really am flattered - even perhaps a bit embarrased. I think it's pretty obvious where the best group of "pool fanatics" on the internet hang out, and I'm happy to be considered a part of that group :). I'm hoping to meet all of you who do go to Virginia, whether you participated in sending players to the US Open or not. And if, for some unforseen reason, this doesn't happen, or I have spoken to soon and I'm not one of the ones going, I still mean what I've said, and I'm sure there will be other tournaments where we'll have a chance to meet. I plan on going to the DCC in January, so if not the Open in September, maybe I'll meet some of you in Kentucky!

I won't be posting much for the next week because I'll be out of town on vacation, but I'll try to keep up with what's going on here. I'm taking my laptop, so I might pop in here and there. I wasn't going to take my cue, but now that this is all happening, I really don't want to take a week off from playing, so I'm taking my cue and plan on hitting balls while I'm gone!

Jimmy,

You are going so fagetaboutid okay? I just think this is the greatest thing!!! I'm hoping this will really have some momentum because this could be just the thing to help turn this game around some. Think about it, we're sending two players, I don't know, maybe three, whatever, it's cool with me. I'm just hoping that Scott Smith does make a big deal about it at the Open and this gets a big notice from everyone. I've already gotten my $25 worth just thinking about all this. I'm just thrilled about it and I think others, when they hear about it, are going to get into it too. Maybe at the DCC there will be a whole bunch of players there that would never go but a bunch of people like us chipped in and sponsored them. Hell, we could have different forums sending their players and we could get some side action up, I mean this could really go somewhere! I'm psyched!!

JimmyM and RickW,
Exactly right. We must have serious pool fanatics on this forum, I can't wait for the tournament to start.
