I recently had a tip installed...Cueshop used 5 minute 2 part epoxy...seems to be fine
Also tip was 14mm onto 13mm ferrule...trimmed the side of the tip with the lathe tool, rounded the top with a file
I have seen nearly all tips installed with superglue"
Which works best, regular superglue, gelled superglue or 5 minute epoxy???

Gel CA allows for more time to center the tip. Adhere's well as long as everything else is done correctly. Specifically Loctite 454, or some use a non-gel Loctite Professional with great results.

Trimming with the lathe tool is perfectly fine.

I used epoxy for years with great results.
I changed to superglue a few years ago mostly
because I learned nobody cared but me that a tip glued on
with epoxy will stay bonded for decades.
Truth is, most players have their tips changed long before
the CA is likely to breakdown. Gel is the best choice.

Trimming and rounding is best down with a razor blade, ESP for
layered tips.

You can also use Weld-Wood contact cement if you have the time. I knew a place that did that on house cues for years.
 
i use locktite gel. gel dries softer then reg thin crazy glue. this is important bc it absorbs the shock of a drop or miscue

alao when trimming a layered tip i always trim TWARDS the ferrule with the sharpest tool possible. also applying pressure to the top so the layers dont come apart.

ive never had a tip fall off or come apart

Put your cupped live center on the tip and trim it with a razor blade. That way you get it nice and flush, and don't risk gouging the ferrule with your lathe tooling, or have to sand it flush, and removing ferrule material that way. It's also about 5 times faster and easier. Do a search, and you will find a video that shows the technique.

duane, i dont think you should experiment on a customers cue the first few times.

Good advice. Also, keep in mind that tho razor knife/blades
do the best job in the least time, the little devils do have
a fondness for ferrule material and finger flesh.

Like so many things, you develop a feel with practice.
