opinions needed on slate

Can someone tell me what the deal is with 3 piece slate? Are these tables junk? I'm trying to find a decent used table locally and so far all I have found are 2 Kasson's and they both have 3 piece. Should I run away from these? Thanks a lot for the advice.

unless i am misunderstanding you the 3 piece slate table is what you want. the 3 pieces are laid side by side and the 2 seams are sealed with wax or glue, or something.

there are basically 2 types of slate, Italian and Brazilian. Italian is more of a charcoal color, and brazilian is a lighter shade. they both play about the same from my experience.

just stay away from junk that says its Slatron, or something like that.

Hey thanks for the reply. I know all about Slatron and Slatec and all that garbage. The main reason I asked about the 3 piece slate is that my friend is trying to talk me into buying a Valley coin op table and they're all one piece 3/4 AFAIK. He claims that 3 piece are junk but he knows nothing about them. He has a Valley and is the type where what he owns is best regardless of whether or not it really is. All I know is that most of the more expensive tables I have looked at say they're one piece. But I also read that for a home you want 3 piece (I am assuming they're easier to move and whatnot but not sure about that). I really can't even afford a table but I'm trying to figure out something to get the kids for Christmas (and maybe me too) and I don't want to have any regrets about it. Oh and another reason my friend is pushing Valley so hard is that's what's in ALL the bars around here (Northern Michigan).

Don't run away from a table with a 3-piece slate. All the better tables use 3 pieces -- Brunswick, Diamond, etc.
The slate seams are perfectly matched by experienced Table Mechanics using Bondo®. Some seem to prefer beeswax, but I don't know why.

Yeah your friend does not have a clue. Almost any good 9 foot table will be 3 pieces of slate. My Brunswick Goldcrown is, and it was about $9000 Canadian when it sold new. I dont know of any 9-foot table that would be 1 piece, do you have any idea what the slate would weigh? The only thing that matters with slate is the depth, 3/4 inch slate, 1 inch slate, 1.5 inch slate, almost as a rule the thicker the slate is the better and more expensive the table will be.

about 90% of all tables are 3 p.s. now. it is easier to move and level. an 8' , each piece is about 200lbs. over time a 1 piece call tweak cross corner like a piece of plywood, but not all of them. they are not screwed to a frame like 3 p.s. is. the 2 kinds of slate is itilian and brazilion. itialian has a higher moister content then braz. as long as they are both honed to the same specs it doesn't matter...rock is rock.
