What is everyone's opinion on Paul Dayton Cues? Quality of craftmanship, quality of play, over all look and feel.

My friend is about to buy one but I have heard bad things about the craftmanship/finish and that they hit poorly.

Thanks,

Skippy

You heard correctly.

I would speak my mind entirely, but I try to avoid using curse words on the internet.

I had one, had a bad experience with it (which it turns out isn't that rare) and Paul, sold it cheap (had to since I was honest about the cue) just to get rid of it, will never own one again.

I recommend you and/or anybody else considering a custom cue avoid him at all costs. There are many better options out there.

Reference his cues, the best option for the pool community would be if Paul were to immediately retire, never let another cue leave his shop, sell off all of his equipment and materials, and then spend the rest of his time doing something harmless like playing golf.

Wow! Anyone else have similar experiences?

I think his cues play great. I only tred a plain jane with rings maple and it is one of the best cues i every played with. I buy and sell cues I have played with tads and southwest down to lucasi. Pauls cues are all hand made I realy like his cues one of my top five I would say for playability daton, nitti, skip, gilbert, black creek they all play pretty good.

IMO, there are a whole lot worse custom cues being made out there than a Paul Dayton. IMO, he's not an upper echelon cuemaker, but the fit and finish on most of his cues is pretty decent. Can tell you that his cues are pretty tough to move on the secondary market.

He's an interesting character and early on he built some fairly elaborate pointed and inlaid cues by cutting them in with an Xacto knife and Dremel tool...no pantograph or cnc. Talk about a small return on your time invested.

I will tell you that his butts have a habit of going crooked.

Not only did I have this experience with mine, but after describing in my Ebay auction that mine went crooked but was fixed by Rick Phillippi (read between the lines) people came out of the woodwork and contacted me with similar experiences.

I even had a 30 minute conversation with a guy from New York who called me, the situations we dealt with were so similar it was eerie.

Bottom line, Dayton cues pose a well identified unnecessary risk.

Why take that risk when there are so many better options out there?

i must say that just recently had paul build me a cue and it was everything i had hoped it would be.....the cue not only looked great but plays out of this world......i have heard of ugotda7,s dilema......but i must say hes the only one i have heard of ....there several people here where i live at that own dayton cues and they are very nice ones to boot......so i must defend paul in speaking up and saying hes a great guy to deal with and will try to go that extra mile to help you have a good expirience in having a cue made......i also agree that there are many worse options for selecting a cuemaker....i cant speak for anyone else but only for me and say ,you cant go wrong with getting paul to make you a cue.....i know you will be happy with it....and paul will do his best to make you satisfied......i wish you many great times in playing pool with a cue that is made just for you.......take care, juston

I have to agree with cuewiz on this one. I have known Paul Dayton personally probably longer than anybody on this board. (approximately 30 some years) since he was refinishing antique furniture here in Albany NY. Paul is a perfectionist and stands 100% behind his cues and workmanship. If everybody has had the same experience as stated here on this board then i must ask if they had contacted Paul about all the complaints. It sems to me that Paul would have settled all these complaints. I have 1 of his early cues and i have had it about 9 years or so and it is still not only straight but hits a ton. When i saw Paul at the Super Billiards Expo this year he had sold alot of his cues. So he must be doing something right. I will have to give Paul a call about this tomorrow and see if he has a reply on this matter...........mike

ps, i also have a Russ Espiritu cue also and alot of people think his cues are junk also. but mine hits a ton and have no problems.

i have to agree with ugotda7 here.i had a very similar experience and the worst thing about it is that guy wants to charge money to fix the junk he screwed up in the first place.i wouldn't buy a 6 pointer from him for $100.he makes junk and will not fix it.
