opinions on tight pockets and table speed

So do you all prefer playing on tight pockets, buckets, or somewhere inbetween? Why? Do you like fast/medium/slow tables?

personally, I like medium size pockets (double shimmed) and medium speed tables.

I love fast tables, and pockets that are tight, who doesn't love tight pockets right lol. Naw but the smaller the pockets are the better you have too be a pocketing balls, so you aiming becomes more precise. And tables that are fast it is easier for me to judge my speed. Cole 'TheConArtist'

So...no...I can't stand directly over the pocket and look down. I can barely see over the top of the rail. :p :D
A friend of mine's 4 year old used a stool to reach the table. Just an idea. :p

We've got 16 GCIV with 4 1/8" (measured from point to point on the corners) (rails cut to lenght-no shims) pockets. With Simonis 860. All new Artemis rails.
And they still aren't the tightest pockets in California.

I practice onna triple shimmed GC II with Simonis 860. To be honest, years ago I felt that 760/860 was so fast it took the stroke outta the game but after maturing I found that to be untrue. In real life I ws just hittin the ball way too hard, HAHAHAHA!!! I like to see all tournament pool played on 4 1/2" pockets but I have that sadistic side....

I like the Diamond Pro Cut Pocket (tight) and fast cloth to play on. The fast cloth allows you to play position without feeling you have to smash the cue ball to move it around the table. Tighter pockets tends to force me to play position more with speed and angles and less with spin. This is a good way to practice because I happen to think it is a good way to play. Look at the long and successful tournament career of Buddy Hall. He plays beautiful position using speed and angles. I am convinced that his longevity is partially due to his style of play being pretty close to the correct one for others to emulate.

Shimming pockets is a bad thing all the way around in my opinion. It makes the pockets play phoney. I think it is a better approach to change the angles of the pocket opening. Opening the pocket angle makes shots down the rail much tougher (like a Diamond Pro Cut Pocket).

i find that my best game comes out on fast tables with tight pockets. on the tables i am used to (slow cloth medium pockets) it often takes all my effort to get some shape because the cloth is so damn slow so i tend to over hit (i dont have much of a power game). on fast cloth i can tighten up and finesse my shape easier. my runout percentage probably doubles when i play at the tournament tables at hard times sac even though the pockets are almost half a ball smaller than where i normally play.

Isn't the center a relative term when talking about pockets? If I'm shooting down rail the absolute center is almost unmakable, at least on the tables I play on (Shimmed at our pool hall and if you touch the rail it only goes in at slower speeds).

tight verses recesed

i have been playing on a diamon table with pro cut pockets and you cannot hit the rail or the ball will jaw....you have to go dead center on most shots...rail shots have to be hit with good pocket speed also....
i think that even a tight table that does not have the pockets recessed....in other words... far into the inside lip of the pocket, play easier than a diamon. you really have to put the ball all the way to the back of the pocket for it to fall.....so tough pockets and tight pockets are really 2 different things..
also i tried that slipstick of petes and dont have to use power on my shaft anymore! and ive used power all my life!...it is good stuff!

That's a nice thought ...

But an impossiblilty if you have played more than 1 game of Pool .... lol
The only one I know that even comes close to doing that is a friend of
mine and a 2 time National Champion, and he doesn't do it ALL the time, but
comes closer to doing it more than anyone else I know, including Pros
I have watched.
