What is the best location of each ball in the rack when I rack my own and what should I do when racking an opponents rack ?? I had always put the seven and eight up top on the shoulders of the rack when I spot some one a ball or two --But it hit me last week at the Predator open when everbody put the two and three on the outside corners and seemed to end up with the one,two and three down table especially the ultimate winner Thanks Mick

The 2 and 3 balls are placed in the corners in 10-ball because of the rules adopted at the tournament. You should be aware, however, that pattern racking in 9-ball is a violation of the rules. I know it has been around since Jesus was a corporal, but it is against the current WPA rules.

I rack 9 ball like this to get a decent spread safer for them not to run out. it goes: 1

798

When I am practicing I rack the balls a certain way everytime so I can see which balls are going where. That way when I look at the rack in a tourney - I have an idea of what is going to go where. When I rack in the tourney i just throw the 1 on top 9 in the middle and whereever they fall - they fall.

There is no perfect solution as each table & breaker is different...and each can change with the day. It depends if they break from the rail, from the center, or the middle. It depends if they hit it solidly or tend to cut the break. It depends if the table is wet or dry, fast or slow, racks tight or loose...

I've tried the Tucker rack (on myself in practice) and it works OK. Its a good starting point, but needs to be adjusted based on the factors above. You can look for two balls that went to the "wrong end" of the table and swap them in the rack.

The most critical balls to control are the lower numbers. You already have traffic on the table to help you so you need to get your opponent going end to end early in the rack to stop their run early.

You want the two on the oposite side they are going to break from if you can figure out which side they break from that is.

I play in a nine-ball summer league. In league, the 1,3,5,7 are worth 1 point, while the 9 is worth 6 pts... don't ask me why; I argued to score 2,4,6,8 and 9.

I typically tell my team mates to rack like this

1
35
X9X
7X
X

...or some variation above, but always keping the 3,5,7 away from the points, or close to center of the rack. I find that these positions are hardest to put these three balls (3,5,7) in since they are the scored balls.

I've had several good players tell me the same . . . get the two away from break side . . . and stack the rack like this:

<Break Side

1
8 7
6 9 5
2 4
3

It does have some benefit based on my using it for about a year.
