Optimum ferrule size

People say that shorter ferrule will create less deflection, so it's a better choice, 314(2) has 6/10 inch, Z(2) has 4/10 inch ferrule.

So what's the best choice possible?

Does long ferrule offer any advantages?

I was thinking a straight maple shaft, 6/10 inch ferrule, 12.5mm tip, is this a good combination?

Shorter the better. No ferrule is best.

I personally like a 1/2", thin walled and uncapped Ivorine 3 or Juma at 12.25mm. It seems to work for me when I'm not shooting with my OB-1 at 12mm.

Here's some food for thought:

Wow.. I never would have guessed that typical ferrule material is on the order of twice the unit weight as maple... surprising.

And for a while a couple of years ago I was considering having a cuemaker in the UK make me a custom pool cue... he wanted to install his regular brass ferrule... wonder how much THAT would have made whitey deflect if I had agreed.

elephant ivory is pretty heavy, so it would deflect more, then why people still choose ivory as a best ferrule material? All high end cues have ivory ferrules?

Is shorter ferrule more prone to cracking?

I don't understand if shorter ferrule is lighter, better, then why not all high end cues use them on their cues? Or maybe the ferrule length is just a personal preference, and the effect of deflection is minimum?
