O'Sullivan wins first two frames vs. Dott

Did you see when Ronnie was just inches short of millimeter perfect position? ...

For those who don't know what we are talking about, mine and Craig's silly missives are quotes from the legendary snooker commentator Ted Lowe.

btw Craig, did you see Ronnie getting cooked? I assume he lost focus.

His biggest weakness seems to be that he gets a bit sulky when he's struggling to find that super-zone that he's capable of.

Clive (one of the commentators) mentioned that he suffered from depressions in the past, and it looked to him Ronnie was a classic case of manic-depressive. Hmm actually that sounds about right. When he's good he's great, when he's bad he sucks. I have always felt that if Ronnie had the mentality of say, Steven of Steve he could become World Champion a dozen times. Unfortunately it always seems that those with the most talent are lacking somewhat in the mental area, and vice versa. Seems to be the case in other sports aswell. Until you get someone who is hugely talented and has a good head on his shoulders. That's when you can become dominating. Lance Armstrong and Michael Schumacher spring to mind. Oh wait the final has started allready....bye!

I tend to think that almost all humans are manic depressive to a degree. In Ronnie's case, I think it is more simple. He has had much success purely from his ability to zone in to his high abilities. Which being much higher than most players, rarely met much friction.

But up against guys whose zone is nearly 80% of his own (not that far away) and who have made their careers through battling / eeking out every bit of talent they possess through strategy and concentration, Ronnie is sometime found short.

I think he has incredible natural talent, but his mental strength, though excellent (to achieve what he has achieved), is not up to the standard of some of the other players.

Ok I'll start...

Ebdon wins the toss, wipes his cue and approaches the table. Walks around the table several times, slaps his chest, counts to 5,678, and writes a small novel then plays safe.

Dott awakes and approaches the table, frowns several times, looks at the score board to work out the score, its frame 1 and 0-0 so he starts his shor routine. This consists of touching toes, alternate direction arm swinging and 5 star jumps per shot. He lines up his shot....<ring ring>, oh no somebody's phone went off so Dott returns to his chair to compose himself, Dott approaches table... Zzzzz

Craig <<---- Will be in the pub all day tomorrow instead of watching the final!

They shortened the first session to 6 frames, due to the incredible pace the match was moving along at. But you knew this allready:cool:

I suspect in a way, Ronnie is having problem respecting his opponent because of how talented he is. He may feel that he can play much better than his opponent if he was at the table, and he is so talented that he simply cannot understand why anyone needs to take that long to finish something which is so simply to him.

When Ronnie comes over to the US to play 9 Ball, I think he will have a good time. In the US, I suspect no one would complan if he went to change his tip in the middle of a match after his opponent finally got into his rhythm.

Some very interesting demos by Steve Davis. He played with a cue with absolutely no chalk on it with a cueball with no chalk and got two big kicks in row. They now suspect it is down to an oil used in the production of the cloth. Then he demonstrated the difference between a clean rail and one that is loaded up with chalk. The difference was huge! On a clean rail a cueball at a given speed bounced about 2 feet, when the rail was loaded up with chalk the cueball bounced about 6 inches further!

maybe they've solved the problem of the kick then at last! and john parrott and the cushion demo was interesting - i couldnt believe that chalk would make that difference!

Let's put it this way: there was (a lot of) moments when it would have been more action to watch paint dry instead of that game:D

I started a new thread called Snooker - The Crucible Final so we can (possibly) keep the AZ crowd a little up to date. They aren't my favorite players either (allthough Ebdon is growing on me since his first title, he loves the game sooo much) but it's still the WC final.
