Does anyone know anything about Waldorf MD and the surrounding area?

My sister and her family just bought a house there and I was just curious
about the area. Things to do? PLaces to eat? things not to miss?

They will be there for about 3 years. Her husband is a pilot for the Army but
will be stationed at Andrews AFB.

Waldorf is on the Southeast side of DC near St Charles.

thanks

That be PG County man. Howards is the pool hall on RT. 301. Use to be owned by a road player, Butch Parsons. # 1 attraction seems to be watching the police beat the hell out of somebody.
Oh yeah, steamed Maryland blue crabs w/ cold beer. Captain Pell's on 301 for da crabs.

Waldorf is definitely an up-and-coming area in the real estate market. There is an abundance of shopping facilities, and one doesn't have to travel too far to find what they're looking for.

Don is right about the Maryland blue crabs at Captain Pell's. Delicious! :D

Nearby in Arnold, MD, there's a really nice pool room, Bill and Billie's. They have two snooker tables, and there are probably about 20 or more Gold Crowns for the other pocket billiard games. Every Monday, they have a $100-added (if they get 16 players or more) tournament, double elimination, $20 entry fee. Lots of great players frequent this pool room, and it is comfortable.

I've heard some tales about the law enforcement in the area a/k/a "The Heat," and whenever I visit Waldorf, I definitely make sure I do the speed limit!

If your sister has kids, they do have a very good public school system in place!

Maryland is a beautiful State, and there's an abundance of activities. Annapolis is paradise in the summertime. If you get the chance to take one of those sunset cruises, the scenery is breath-taking. Kids love Annapolis, and there are plenty of great restaurants. If they are going to be living in Maryland for a spell, they may have to start rooting for the Orioles. Camden Yards in Baltimore is a great place to visit in the summertime! And I hear this season, they're kicking some butts! :D

when i go to nj i go past howards on rte 301,i think there are a few others as well,i'll try to notice them on the way up this weekend.

Thanks for the info.

My sister has three boys ages 8,6,5. She told me that there was a good
school there. They were having a difficult time finding a house and then almost lucked into this one. Its a nice house and even has a finished basement big enough for a pool room. Too bad they dont play pool.

The pool info will help me when I visit and play "uncle frankncali" to the boys.

Thanks again for the info and if I am that way I will be sure to try and catch the DC area AZers.

Frank,

I agree with JAM that you should check out Bill and Billie's in Arnold, MD (about 30 miles) for Pool. You can also check out Champions Billiards or USA Billiards in Laurel, MD (also about 30 miles).

Howards is okay (advantage is closeness to Waldorf) but the tables are somewhat close together and not as well kept up as the other places mentioned.

Another crab house suggestion is Captain Billy's in Popes Creek (Newburg, MD - about 20 miles south of Waldorf). There are 3 crab houses here (within a stones throw) and they are all pretty good though.

Regarding food, the regular chains exist in Waldorf as well as some surprisingly good regional chains and some local Mom and Pop joints.

Good Luck. Jerry

i wanted to stop ,but time was not on my side,i think howards has changed thier name to something like sports bar cafe?theres a bowling alley off 301 that probally has tables too.all the major chain stores are there, also there is a 1/4 mi racetrack in budds creek.i really like that track, its close to sea level and i never broke anything there.
