Outside english or center ball?

you may say position is irrelevant, and perhaps if it's the winning ball you might be right in some circumstances, but you should alway have control of your cueball in any case otherwise turning whitey loose could cause a scratch. that being said, you can cut that shot in all day long playing center ball if you want.

I would hit the shot with low left for a few reasons. The first is because of the ball skidding due to chalk and dirt on one of the balls along with high humidity. The second reason is to negate the throw from cutting the ball backwards. The third reason is I can hit the ball fuller and throw it slightly, giving a better bite on the draw with less speed. And lastly, with low left, the object ball will turn and roll with a more vertical spin towards the pocket instead of having side spin and cause it to rattle. It will want to climb into the pocket with top spin instead of a flat ball with side spin.

Bottom with a touch of outside to me is the smart play as it lets me hold onto the cueball and control the object ball.

I was taught to always use a little something to hedge my bet. A little less or more left english is still gonna get the ball into the pocket.

If you aim the shot for center ball and make a stroking error you can apply a little left or RIGHT on the cueball and all bets are off as to making it.

All errors can be classified pretty much into 3 camps. 1)Aiming errors 2)Speed errors 3)Cueing/Stroke errors. I tend to think that most errors for advanced players usually fall into the cueing/stroke category.

Exactly! Low with a hair of outside is definitely the way to play it. It's so much easier to make this shot with a hair of outside. Matter of fact, I'd venture to say that anyone who plays at least the 7 worse than me or better shoots this shot the same way I do.

Which method do you think is better and why?

On that shot i would use low ball hit and firm.Using outside english means
you hit the shot thicker and really have to watch your speed which to me
is making the shot have more of a chance to miss.
Now if i had that same angle and the ob was on the rail i might use outside spin.Aim it thick, and being on the rail you can still miss them and make them just as long as the speed is right.
