Many good players will use outside English on angled shots for the sole purpose of pocketing the ball. I've heard Buddy Hall call it "helping English". I've seen Earl set up a shot with an angle and then say, "now you'd naturally hit this ball with outside English". I don't think anyone would question these guy's ball pocketing abilities. I have an older accu-stats tape where Buddy is one of the commentators for a match between Efren and Nick Varner. Again Buddy brings up "helping English" and goes on to say that Efren is the only one he's seen that doesn't use some sort of "helping English". So, yeah, I guess it's safe to say that many players, of all levels, use English to aid in pocketing balls and not for the sole purpose of playing position.

In pool there are as many dissenting opinions on what to do at the highest level as there are players.

Just look at the side arm stroke of keith macready.

If you don't want to take my advice then fine, don't. Colin is about as knowledgable a person of the physics of the game as possible. We have gotten into some hot debates before on what actually happens on the table and in some cases I've had to admit he had a slightly better understanding than me.

But I'll tell you again. until you are absolutely confident that you can make a shot nineteen or twenty out of twenty times with any type and amount of english, don't use english except to control the CB or speed up and slow down the OB/CB as needed.

I DO know what I'm talking about.

Well Jaden I specifically asked the question to prove that you were wrong in saying that you should never use english unless for position in the other thread. People have clearly explained the advantages of using english when shooting the nine ball when shape is not necessary so I rest my case. I would not have rubbed it in your face but you obviously called me out here and I had to reply.

when shooting the 9 ball to win the game I use outside english on the majority of angled shots not to mention tons of other shots when I'm not needing the english for position. It is easier to make these shots with english for me.

I watch the pros play all the time on tv and I can clearly see them using outside when shooting the 9 ball when there is no reason for position.

Someone in another post is telling me that it is never easier to make a ball using english and that it should only be used for getting shape.

So do you see pros using english when making the 9? Do you use english when making certain cuts?

you beat me to it jimmy.
buddy calls it helping english for many reasons.
1-so you can stroke the shot.
2-so you can reduce skid
3-the spin that you put onto the ball your pocketing helps it go in. so if it touches the pocket or rail as it approaches the pocket, it throws itself into the pocket. (hope i worded that right)
