Manalo beats Django in Pacman 9-Ball!

"Marvelous" Marlon Manalo brushed aside Francisco "Django" Bustamante, 9-5,
and lead the march of players into the third round of the winner's bracket
yesterday in the Manny Pacquiao International 9-Ball Open at the Hobbies
Mall billiards hall.

After winning the lag, Manalo jumped to a quick 2-0 lead, maintained the
cushion, and thwarted the brief charge of Bustamante in the middle game.

Bustamante tied the count after 10 racks, 5-all, but got stuck as Manalo
caught fire down the stretch.

"You can't afford to commit too many mistakes against Django. Fortunately
I'm quite sharp today," said Manalo, many-time winner in the US pool circuit
and perennial gold medal winner in the Southeast Asian Games.

The Mandaluyong ace, one of the members of the Team Philippines that will
compete against the best players the world can offer in the Kabayan World 9-
Ball Challenge: RP vs. Rest of the World, beat Eric Rodriguez in the opening
round Wednesday night.

Manalo, third placer in the World Pool Championship two years ago in
Kaohsiung, Taiwan, will next meet Karl Boyles of the United Kingdom.

Bustamante was eventually eliminated in the double elimination tournament,
losing to Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat.

The famous Puyat Sports stable took a twin slap on the face after Efren "Bata"
Reyes also fell by the wayside against little-known Jong-Jong Pangan, 9-8.

Rodrigo Geronimo shared the limelight with a pair of stunning victories against
former US Open winner Rodney Morris, 9-2, and former Asian 9-Ball Tour
champion Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego, 9-7.

Reigning Philippine Junior champion Mark Mendoza also stayed on the right
side of the draw with a pair of 9-7 wins against Jay-Jay Escultor and Monching
Mistica.

Marcus Chamat of Sweden, a frequent Manila visitor, beat Darren Appleton, 9-
6, for his second win in the P2-Million event sponsored by boxing idol Manny
Pacquiao.

In other matches, Patrick Gonzales, top player of Rocketman Enterprises,
edged Rene Cruz, 9-8, and Gandy Valle downed Rene Mar "Revo" David, 9-3.

The champion here take away P1 million while the runner-up gets P500,000.

Meanwhile, everything is set for the 2007 Mindanao Open on November 6 at
the Upper Sangan Labangan National Highway Labangan Zamboanga, del Sur
on November 6. A total pot prize of P120,000 put up by sportsman Nasser

He's out of the tournament, after getting beat by Luat next.

Looks like they got a full field of great players from around the world. Some players must have arrived early, gearing up for the WPC.

Looks like Manalo is on a roll. If he wins this tournament, he will be one of the favourites in the upcoming WPC. There are some good foreign players who participated like Immonen, Chamat, Boyes, Appleton and Rodney Morris but what surprised me is that Efren, Bustamante, Corteza, Luat, Gallego, Kiamco and even Ronnie Alcano have all been knocked out to the loser's side by relatively unknown opponents. Only Busta was beaten by Manalo so that was no surprise.

THERE was no stopping the express train named "Marvelous" Marlon Manalo.
Breaking good and pocketing even better, Manalo jumped the gun on the unsuspecting Karl Boyles of the United Kingdom en route to a runaway 9-1 victory in the P2 million total pot tournament dubbed as Manny Pacquiao International 9-Ball Open yesterday at the Hobbies Mall Billiards Hall.

Boyles avoided a shutout with a win on the seventh frame as Manalo miscalculated his preparation on the green six.

"I felt good with my shots. Kahit sino siguro ang kalaban ko mahihirapang manalo kapag ganun ang itinitira ko," said Manalo, one of the country's representatives in the Kabayan World 9-Ball Challenge: Philippines vs. Rest of the World on Nov. 12-13 in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.

Manalo will next face former world champion Mika Immonen of Finland, 9-6 winner over Jomar De Ocampo.

Equally impressive was teenaged sensation Filipino-Japanese Mike Takayama, who stunned reigning world champion Ronnie Alcano, 9-7.
The other undefeated players in the double elimination event sponsored by boxing idol Manny Pacquiao were Dennis Orcollo, Marcus Chamat, Richard Cuna and Jomel Sultan, Russian Petiza, Jeffrey De Luna, Michael Feliciano.

Billiard Philippines News : WPC Qualifiers Start Tomorrow with Record Number of Entries

MANILA, PHILIPPINES---The qualifying tournament for the 2007 World Pool Championship opens tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 27) at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City with a record 180 players competing for 10 slots in the WPC.

Players from 18 countries have signed up for the 10 events.

Countries with the most number of entries are:

Taiwan ? 43
Japan ? 20
China ? 9
Vietnam ? 8
Singapore ? 8
Kuwait ? 8
Saudi Arabia -- 5
Philippines -- 50

The other players come from Denmark, Finland, United Kingdom, Thailand, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Brunei, Indonesia, Canada, France Korea, Yemen and Turkey.

The qualifiers will run from Oct. 27 to 31. Two events will be staged each day.

The competition format is single elimination (knockout system). Each match is race to 7, alternate break.

Billiard Philippines News : PACMAN INT'L 9-BALL OPEN GETS UNDERWAY

Even in the heat of busy schedule, Filipino boxing sensation Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao still has the time to indulge in other sports that has caught his fancy.

Also an avid pool player, Pacquiao has put his money where his mouth is with the inaugural of the Manny Pacquiao International 9-Ball Open which will be held the qualifying round from October 24 to 26 at the Hobbies of Asia building in Pasay City.

The Last 16 will be held at the SM Mall of Asia on October 27.

Two of the country's top cue artists - Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante - will be bannering the P2-million event.

Reigning double world champion Ronato Alcano, Dennis Orcollo, Marlon Manalo, Rodolfo Luat, Ramil Gallego, Warren Kiamco and Lee Vann Corteza will join Reyes and Bustamante in the tournament wherein the top finisher will receive P1 million and the runner-up P500,000.

Alcano, is fresh from a runner-up finish in the 32nd annual US Open 9-Ball at the Chesapeake Convention Center in Chesapeake, Virginia over the weekend.

But Gabica, Bustie, Reyes, Valle, Corteza, Gomez, Gallego are all out.

Thanks for the update. Do you know who finally knocked out Busta and Reyes out of the tournament? Any brackets?

I have a feeling some of these lesser known Filipino players will make an impact in the upcoming WPC. They have everything to gain and nothing to lose. I would not be surprised if they upset a lot of the more famous players, assuming they get through the qualifiers first of course.

you are welcome. on the loser's bracket, efren got beaten by Elvis Calasang and Bustie by Manalo. I got a text message now that they are playing for top 8 and Alcano is out, he was beaten by Rodney Morris and Manalo is out too, beaten by Joven bustamante. Orcollo and De Luna have secured their seats for top 8 as well, beating "jong jong' or "plong plong' (lol, not sure of the name) and "Tisoy' respectively. some are still playing now.
Indeed, some of the players on the top 16 are lesser known but equally talented. I don't even know their names! Just their monickers.

Feliciano, Paoay and even 'pork chop' are in the last 8 while players like Reyes, Busta, Chamat, Immonen, Appleton, Corteza, Manalo, Gabica, Gallego and Alcano have all been elimated.

First time I have heard of these first 3 players. All I can say is that the qualifiers will be very interesting if they join.

The champion will take away P1 million while the runner-up gets P500,000
in the event organized by Manny Pacquiao Promotion in close cooperation
with Solar Sports. Meanwhile, everything is set for the 2007 Mindanao

Thanks again. Jeff De Luna impressed me in the WPC with his breaking ability. There were games where I saw him make 4 to 5 balls when breaking.
With this win against Rodney, it seems he is peaking at the right time. He should be considered a threat against any player in this year's WPC. It would not surprise me at all if he lands in the top 16 or even the top 8.

Luat beats Joven! Gains semis in Pacman 9-Ball Int'l Tour!

Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat got the better of his marquee duel against
reigning Korean Pro Tour champion Joven "The Shark" Bustamante and
stormed into the semis via a cliff hanging 9-8 victory in the 1 st Manny
Pacquiao International 9-Ball Open Championships late Saturday at the SM
Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

With the win, Luat who hails from Angeles City, Pampanga and playing
under the banner of Negros Billiard Stable arranged an intriguing showdown
Jeffrey de Luna, winner over lone American hopeful Rodney Morris, 9-6.

Actually it was Joven, distant relative of former world no.1 Francisco
"Django" Bustamante are leading 3-0 in the opening match before Luat
close the gap at 3-2 count in the 5 th frame.

Then next rack was tied at 5-all, 7-all, 8-all, before Luat nailed a 9-8
triumph.

" Buti na lamang nakahabol si Boy (Luat) at 'yung determinasyong niyang
manalo ay nandun," expained by NBS coach Christopher Palses who
watching in the sideline with NBS boss Jonathan Sy and reigning national
open champion Lee Vann Corteza to give support to Luat.

"Boy Samson" is a moniker he has carried on since the 70's because of his
"Samson" break also beat Ruben Cuna, 9-7, late Friday at the Hobbies
Building in Macapagal Avenue.

According to tournament director Julie Guevarra and Ed Sudario, both Luat
and De Luna already assured P150,000 each for barging in the final four in
this event supported by Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao in close
cooperation with Solar Sports.

The champion in this P2 million tournament gets P1million ($22,696) while
the runner-up take home P500,000 ($11,348).

The matches between Dennis Orcullo versus Jomel "Porkchop" Sultan,
Michael Feliciano opposite Val Pajuay are still playing as of press time.

In other matches saw in the round-of-16 late Friday at the Hobbies
Building, Morris trounced current double world champion Ronato Alcano,
9-6, De Luna toppled Eduardo Saracho,9-1, Bustamante nipped Marlon
Manalo, 9-5, Sultan upset Marcus Chamat, 9-5, Orcullo crushed
Demosthenes Pulpul, 9-2, Feliciano outplayed Elvis Calasang, 9-5, and
Pajuay waylaid Russian Petiza, 9-5.

Jeff De Luna is the champion

Just learned that Jeff De Luna has won the Manny Pacquiao tournament after beating Luat 10 to 6 and Dennis Orcullo 11 to 9 in the finals. He should feel very confident now going into the WPC which starts next week. Watch out for this young player. Winning over Rodney Morris, Luat and Orcullo just shows he is capable of beating anybody in the WPC. He showed great potential last year and I have a feeling he will do even better this year.
