Anyone else experience pain in hamstrings? I'm right handed so most of my weight goes on my left (front) leg when I shoot. I've been having some pain in my left hamstring and it seems to be getting worse. I am a very heavy guy and I have been playing quite a bit (2-3 hrs a day) since I got my new table a couple of weeks ago, but not even when I played tennis did I have this problem and I played several times a week.

I thougt it was just that my body had to get used to this new activity but I think that should have happened by now. Anyone have any experience with this?

Heat and stretch your hamstrings.

Not from pool but from running. Runners get this a lot - it comes from overuse of a muscle especially running uphills and also running cold without warm up stretching. Sometimes it comes from being too agressive stretching when your muscle is cold.

You might have injured it doing something else but pool is aggravating it.

The muscle will heal on it's own completely in six weeks as long as you don't continue to aggravate it. The standard stretch for hamstrings is, in a standing position, put your hands on your knees, keep your legs straight, and slowly bend forward (gently). You should probably do this after any long sitting or resting period. You'll feel the hamstrings loosen up.

Here's are some suggestions for pool.

- Stand with your hips more open to the shot, kind of like a snooker player but not that extreme, with both legs slightly flexed and weight centered between both feet.

- When you're down on the shot, you should be able to easily lift your bridge hand. There should be very little weight on your bridge hand. This stance gives you a lot of stability and clearance for your cue swing too.

- This position is not only easier on your hamstrings, but easier on your back. Your body is stable and will be supported evenly by both legs.

This is the stance I use by the way.

Not from Pool but I do get pain in left hamstring often from golf.
After I did Ichiro's rubber man stretch like my doctor suggested while waiting it has gotten significantly better. I rather have my right hamstring hurt than my left. It seems to bother me a lot when my left hamstring hurt. Don't know why.

i've had it happen before.I started realizing i was locking my legs straight not bent at all...hurt like heck after a couple hours. Now i make sur i bend both legs just a little for every shot.took a while to get used to...but it sure helped.Don't know if our problems are the same.hope this helps.
ps...Tates post sounds dead on the money to me.

Are you staying too close to the table when you move around (thereby dragging your leg)?

I sometimes do this and it causes leg pain.

I definitely have a lot of weight on my bridge hand. My arm and fingers are sore as well (especially my pinkie). I'm going to experiment with the stance you're suggesting.

Thanks for all the responses.

My first thought is that it isn't your hamstring per say. Is your back bothering you too, I'm thinking it is sciatica.

This would be my initial thought as well. Disk injuries are aggravated with forward bent postures such as what occurs during the pool stance. While you definately can't be certain of what your injury is from your brief description, and while I don't think this is a good place to get medical advice, I will give you one thing to try. Before playing, trying laying on your elbows for approx 5 minutes, then push your chest off the floor 10 times keeping your hips flat on the ground. While playing, stand up and do some backward bending with your hands on your hips every 10 or so minutes. This helps reposition the gel in the disk back towards the center where it belongs. Of course, if you have any increase in pain in your hamstring while doing this then back off of it.

I highly doubt you are getting actual hamstring pain from holding a pool stance unless you are doing something very odd in your stance.

this happens to me and its my sciatic nerve. Same with my boyfriend. He has special insoles that help. Try some orthotics and see if that helps.

Ok..here it is ...check out my web site. I've been preaching this for years. The best medicine is preventive medicine.

DUH! Lose weight, exercise, and stretch. You do realize you are placing stress in the same area of your body all the time. In your condition, I'm surprised you're not complaining about back problems yet. You're placing your body in constant repetitive movement.
