Palmer experts (possibly)

Hello, AZ

Recently acquired a lot of cues and the bunch had quite a few extra shafts, that don't go with the cues. The seller said they person she got the cues from was robbed some years back, the extra shafts most likely went with some of the stolen cues.

Anyways, in the attached pic, third and fourth from the top look to be Palmer (looking) shafts and one of them is spliced. I'm no Palmer expert, but have never seen a Palmer with a spliced shaft.
Does anyone have any info on the spliced shaft?

Pictures suck, I will have the cues in hand about two weeks and will be selling off. Just trying to get a head start on the research.

I am no Palmer expert but I'll clean up a little and put out some refreshments while we wait for them.

In the mean time, you have a couple shafts there that might interests me. The ones with the black and red dashed rings.

Do you have the cue for those? I call dibs. :grin-square: (Especially the second one from the top.)

What you see in the pic, is what I am getting, plus a Black "Hustler" that needs repair and a ostrich 2x4 George.
This is what I would call a "closet find"

Well, here would be my observations.

I've never seen a spliced Palmer shaft; doesn't mean they don't exist, but I would susupect this was made by someone else.

Shafts 3 and 6 look similar to Palmer shafts, especially first catalog, with the pearlized collar, two surrounding black lines, and rounded brass inserts.

Shaft 4 sort of looks like a Paradise shaft, with a more solid white collar and one black line, next to the forearm. However, the rounded brass insert looks more like Palmer, and Palmer did make this type of shaft, for example in their Model A, second catalog.

I note that your picture doesn't give a good view of the ferrules, which might provide some clues. For example, most second catalog Palmers came with the Lucite ferrule of the day, but not all. Some of the first and second came with older micarta, and I believe, some fiber ferrules, but there was some variation.

That's about what I have...

This is the best picture I have at the moment, should have the cues and shafts in hand, about two weeks. When I get them I will post good pictures, so all us AZ cue detectives can try and figure out what they are. Should be fun! My hope is to get all the cues and shafts to good homes.
 
Without close-ups of the inserts and specifications on the width of the collars and rings it's impossible to say whether they came from the Palmer shop.

I tend to agree.

Those dashed ring shafts are interesting. I already said what I think the top one is. The pilot will tell. It could also be a good maker though.

The other two are interesting, and different from each other. Would love to see more of thise. Could be good makers.
 
4,5, and 6 could be palmers or not. the others no. at least old palmers before they went to mass production overseas.
