Palmer Model J Cue Question

Not sure if this the right forum but here goes. I recently bought a Palmer Model J cue from an individual who said he won it in a pool game around 1972 or so. I have read that Szambotti made some of these butts. Is there anyway to tell for sure? Thanks for any help.

There is no way to tell for sure, but e-mail me some pics to palmercollector@aol.com and I will try to help. If the year is accurate, it probably was not a Szamboti blank - it's too early. Most of the J's before 1973 were built in the Palmer shop. The Szamboti blanks were built after that and copied the style Palmer was using. Szamboti blanks have very clean veneers and tight miters. Usually the points are a little longer.

In any case, the J is a very desirable cue and admired by many. In the photo below, the upper cue has a Szamboti forearm - I only know this because I researched this particular cue and I know who the original owner was, and he knew Gus had made the forearm.

Gus made some of the forearms for the Palmer Model J, but not the entire butt.
