part of my custom cue research.....what about woods?

I'm not an expert, & this is not a scientific study,,,wonder if anybody has weighed the same size cuts of different woods to get a close average to compare different weights ??.. DID that today before the pool room opened, I had 12 different sets of pen blanks, all were 3/4" x 5-1/2" (lots of ten) some of these may not lend themselves to cuebuilding, but here they are :
butternut 240 grams
cedar 269 g
ash 336 g
sassafras 336 g
walnut 359 g
sycamore 373 g
maple 393 g
coffee tree 400 g
elm 402 g
canarywood 430 g
hickory 533 g
bacote 580 g.............again this was (10) penblanks of each type wood
(the only 12 types I currently have)

...may or may not help anyone decide which wood to use, but does show a lot of difference in weights !
Hello Jack:
Thank you for the information. I am wondering if you happen to have a picture of sassafras that you could please care to share with us. I have never heard of this wood and have never seen one before.
Much appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Richard

Curupay may make a nice forearm. I have it on a sneaky pete and it sure makes a nice hitting cue. The cue I have is 19 oz without any weight bolts added.

Good luck in finding some. :D
I have a few. They are pretty. I bet they match up nice with a tan or wine colored leather wrap.

nipponbilliards......I'll try to get a picture soon,,,the wood looks very similar to ash in the graining and through my eyes, has a slight greenish tint,,,this wood grows in the southeastern usa,,,old timers reportedly made sassafras tea from its roots,,,never tasted any, though.

I love the sneaky, Bob Dzuricky cue, I have made out of Curupay. Wood is very pretty to my eye, and it hits nicely. I was looking a bit last night and didn't see many references to curupay so would assume it is hard to find everywhere.

Have any idea where it grows? (guess I could just look *lol* south america with a limited amount of information)

More I read about the wood the more I realize I'm hanging onto the sneaky.

I got really fortunate in getting this board.
They're pretty hard to find. I dunno what to do with this board yet.
They are pretty rare. The little boards on top are Pernambuco.
Those are pretty hard to find as well. Specially the ones which have curls in them.
They weigh about the same.
Pernambuco's are used for violin bows.

This is true. It makes pretty good tea, actually. It's also the original flavoring for Sarsparilla, the forerunner of rootbeer and I think some of the natural rootbeers still use it for flavoring. The leaves are dried and used for a cajun spice called File' (FEE-lay). The tree doen't usually grow very big, maybe 20' or so.

scottyc........I take most research with a grain of salt (yes, I'm suspiciuos of a lot of it) ,,, www.platinumbilliards.com/rating has some ratings on various shafts that might be of interest to you,,,touts itself as unbiased, but most of what they tested was what they sell,,, so read it with your eyes and mind wide open,,,,jflan
