a legend among gamblers in the detroit area passed this morning. jerry howard, also known as bulldog. he was a reguler at the poolrooms, golf course and bowling alleys. a fearsome gambler in his time, and still was until his last day. he was 89 last month i believe. i only knew him for a few years but my father talked very highly of him and was a good friend of his. he will be missed. good bye bulldog.

I just heard the news late tonight about Jerry "Bulldog" Howard. I've known him for about ten years or so. What a truly incredible man and legend he was. Everyone who ever met him will never forget him. He will be missed for sure!

Bulldog

Jerry Howard bet so high at the race track in Detroit that they gave him his own machine to bet out of.
Jerry Howard was also the highest betting bowler of all time. For big money Jerry robbed all the champs. He had many 300 games.

Heard the sad news last night when I went to the pool room, he was a great guy, came to the pool hall almost every day, still drove himself around Detroit at 89, had about 10 miles to drive each way. Heard a lot of great stories about him last night, he went out fast, thats the way to go if you have to go. There was a sadness that fell over the Hall of Fame last night, thats for sure. He will be missed, always got the action started even at his age. I looked forward to seeing him every time I went to the HOF. He was very friendly and enjoyed playing, still making $3000 scores this year at age 89, who else do you know that is still betting it up at 89.

Does anyone out there have a photo of Jerry that can be posted on this thread? Maybe he is related to Bucktooth? Maybe the Tooth could share some stories about the "Bulldog."

Jerry Howard

Jerry was the greatest weak player in the betting department and his proposition game ability is the stuff of legend. His decades long partner, of course, was Freddie Salem. An average day for the two of them started off at the golf course where they played or bet on many a high stakes golf match. Then, it was off to the race track where, eventually, Bill Rosenbaum hung out. Of the about $75 milllion that Bill lost, I'd guess that Jerry and Freddie got 10% of that. After the last race, off to the bowling alley they'd go. And as Freddie the Beard said, usually robbed everybody. Now you'd think they'd have been done, but no, at about midnight, they'd be off to to The Rack to make a pool game.
I gambled with and against Jerry and Freddie lots of times and always found them to be perfect gentlemen. I wish I had a couple of Jerry Howards to frequent my new place. God, if you're listening to these words, you'll need to have your thinking cap on if you wanna match up with Jerry.
