We had a 10 ball league based on Joe Tucker's 10 ball drill where you basically play the ghost. You break 10 racks, take ball in hand, try to run out. 1 point per ball made. Honestly, I came up with a pattern for the rack, but it really didn't translate to the same layout over and over. We were using a regular rack, and I'm very good at racking tight, but I just wasn't seeing a huge advantage. The most important thing was to make the 2nd ball and maybe another, and spread the balls well at a semi soft speed. Getting a nice even spread was vastly more important than the pattern. I did an 82 and an 84. Another guy got 91. My average was probably about 68-72. Its a fun drill, and a great way to get the answer for yourself if the pattern makes a big difference. I think for the top pro's it might make more of a difference.
That said, every tourney is different and the rules will vary on whether it is allowed or not.
