paul mottey signature question

If the engraving is done tastefully it wont look production, ie. Ginacue, TAD, Ernie Martinez, Ed Prewitt, RC3, and your JMW. Examples of engraving I dont really care for are: the old Josswest, Blackboar (old and new), Lambros, SCHICK - call me crazy but the font he uses - just a little too big.

Regarding signatures- Tascarella takes it. His signature stands out and is easy to identify.

Personally I love the newer Black Boar logo, but as they say, "Everything isn't for everyone."

I always thought that the Schon logo was quite elegant, and seems to have been copied by several cuemakers since its fruition (the letter style and placement on the buttcap).

Just out of curiosity....what do you guys prefer? The "engraving" on the butt cap, or the signature and date on the forearm. Some say the signture detracts from the cue's looks, others say the engraving makes the cue look "production". What are your thoughts?

Jim

I prefer the signature and date on the forearm when you make cues using Maple forearms. I also like the engraved ivory Hoppe style butt when you make cues with Ebony forearms, points, and butt.

Charles

Only on yours! Makes them one of a kind(s)!

Jim,

What you do now works.. Signature on light colored forearms and JMW engraved on dark forearms.. The cue speaks for itself.. The little id mark should never interefere with the cues beauty and neither of yours do..

Me I like the JMW.. Especially on the Hoppes.. But you do what you think is best..

Also.. you have spent enough time on here.. Get back to making my snakewood block cue.. :D :D :) :)
JUST kidding..

Jim,
I think it all depends on ones personal style. I have a few old vintage JW
and rather like the upright 'J' connected to sideways 'W', while my Gina's wouldn't be the same without the GC in butt cap. I have one of your bar bell cues (oh god, thank you.. just love it).. and really believe that you should stick with the signature in forearm.. to me, that is you.. dont change it and above all, whatever you decide... stay consistant. P.S. If this is not really you... well you know.. but if it is you, how long to make me a sweet little ivory jointed, with your world class lizard wrap and some interesting ivory work and sweet colored veneers...?? PM always welcome. Thanks.. Brett

According to the 2nd ed blue book, the 'GC' logo in Butt cap has been Gina's marking 'the nineties' .. I know that all of my 2000 + are also marked that way. Note: You have probably seen it, just maybe hard to recognize the stylish GC. Hope this helps.

Brett,

Thanks for the positive feedback, it is great to hear from people who appreciate what you do! Currently, a simpler cue can be had in about 6-8 mos., a loaded up cue might take a year. If you are interested, give me some idea of what you want and we can go from there.

Someone said you are a "JMW" collector......true?

Thanks again,
Jim

Dear Jim,
Thx your reply. I would be more interested in a higher end (unfortunately, can't go too high at this particular time). One year duly noted. I will send you a PM for additional communication the matter. Re collecting JMW..
I have been aware of your works for some time, but only recently was fortunate enough to have purchased one from a kind gentlemen, who posts here. Also, believe you know SI .. he 'turned me on' to the quality of your work, and sent me several photo's some of his various JMW. and rates your work & playability in his top 5... and I sure respect his opinion, especially in terms of playability. Man was he right about 'hit'. Attached pls see a couple photo's my cue.. not only is it tremendous in cosmetic appeal, ie the wrap is the best i've seen, and the inlays all perfect.. but the hit is definately second to none (and I have hit aplenty). Just fabulous. I am now a big Fan of your's, and thank you for putting out such quality work. Sincerely, Brett
P.S. Si tells me that you are a true gentleman to boot! Note: Hope that your OK with my posting the photo's

Short story....

Hey Jack, Beautiful Cue... Thanks for the case with the SWCues Logo you made for me recently, the natural leather is tanning nicely...

James, I was thinking about having a wrapless ambonya cue made and I never thought of putting the Ambonya in the handle (was thinking Curly Maple handle with Ambonya Butt and Forearm)... Awesome... How long would your wait be to do a Custom 4 or 6 point similar to Jack's?

Chuck

Email me at chardtke@comcast.net if you want to go into more detail about what you are able to do for me...
